Situated in the moors of Northumberland, spectators can enjoy views of green hills and fields that surround the track.
The course at Hexham is used for jumps racing, hosting races from early March until the new year. Due to the distant placement of the venue, the standard of races isn’t regarded as being of the highest quality.
This is because owners often opt not to send their best horses to extremely far away due to travel, and the core set of higher quality jockeys shy away from the track as well for the same reasons.
Therefore, the track rarely hosts anything of Class 3 or above quality. It predominantly focuses on the lower-class races where they can attract less experienced jockeys and more local trainers instead.
Hexham Races: Course Layout
The course is left-handed and rather jagged, with constant short turns rather than few but larger bends like most tracks.
Being a hilltop course, the circuit does have some uphill and downhill sections which often catches some of the less inexperienced horses and jockeys out when there are hurdles in those parts of the course.
The steepest part of the course is the home straight after the final bend of the course. Being at the end of the course, the horses are often a little bit worse for wear coming on to the straight.
As a result, the uphill battle is often slow and tiresome, those who have needed shrugging along from before the bend can often be seen tailing off or even pulling up if they have nothing left in the tank.
The home straight also allows the better travellers in the pack to regain some ground, if the front-running horses haven’t gained a too significant of an advantage then those with the stamina advantage have a great chance of cruising past them on the hill.
Being the most northerly course in England, attending Hexham Racecourse is often seen as a ‘bucket list point’ for racing fans. Despite the uphill climb to the finish line, the final 250 yards is completely flat and has a gradient of zero, which in turn is obviously where spectators stand/sit to enjoy the National Hunt racing on offer.
Viewing from Hexham
Unusually, the course does not have a grandstand, but this does not compromise the attendee’s experience, the vast spaces surrounding the finishing line allow everyone to have a clear view of the horses galloping to the line.
The course is often complimented for its accessibility for all attendees. Despite being 800 feet above sea level, the course is extremely accessible for those with disabilities.
The venue is equipped with several specifically seated areas for those with standing difficulties, as well as a lift for those who may struggle to walk up flights of stairs.
Another feature of the track which accommodates those who may struggle with the hustle and bustle of a racing day is the car park, which is cleverly placed alongside the venue with a view of the track so those who may not be fond of the busy-side of things can still have a great view of all the racing action.
Hexham Racecourse is a great day out for all the family and there is so much to see every meeting, even for those who aren’t a fan of the horse racing itself. The course has a very homely feel to it due to how the bulk of horses, owners and jockeys are all reasonably local.
If you are looking to get to a racecourse that many other racing fans will be envious of, or even if you are looking for a day-out with friends in a different environment, then Hexham Racecourse is the way to go – just make sure you wrap up warm in the colder months as it can get chilly!
Hexham Races Calendar Highlights
The most well-attended meeting in the Hexham Races calendar is the meeting in early May time, which hosts the course’s standout race: The Heart of All England Maiden Hunter Chase, which is streamed live.
The race is three miles and one furlong long and often targeted by chasers who are looking to gain experience in better company. In 2019, the race was sponsored by J S Hubbuck, a Hexham-based farm supplier, who watched debutant Hafajay win by two lengths for North Yorkshire owner Nigel Tinkler.
