The length of the course is 1 mile, 4 furlongs. It utilises most of the track in winter during the national hunt season.

Fairly new when compared to other racecourses, the current Carlisle racecourse location has been in place since 1904. That being said, it that does not hinder it from having an interesting history prior to this.

The racecourse is home to one of the oldest flat horse races in Britain, the Carlisle Bell. The race was originally contested back in 1599 for the first time in its previous location and is still running.

At one time in the 18th century, Carlisle town organised a race for five-year-old horses under the orders of George III. History was made when Carlisle Racecourse, notably the first racecourse in Britain, introduced the tote betting system back in 1929.

Carlisle Sights

Located in the Blackwell village two miles south of the country town of Carlisle in Cumbria, Carlisle Racecourse is a great place to enjoy racing.

An afternoon of watching horses romp to the winning post isn’t quite done justice on the live stream. Thus, if you manage to get there, it is certainly preferable.

In the evening, guests are encouraged to visit the nearby Carlisle city. It is both steeped in English heritage and to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the nearby Lake District National Park.

Solway Firth is another stunning and isolated location which runs along the border of Scotland. However, it’s some miles away from the Carlisle city and the racecourse.

If you fancy historic places and museums, Carlisle Castle and the Tullie House Museum & Gallery offer interesting insights into the turbulent history of the English mainland.

Carlisle Races Course Layouts

The flat horse racing season is held at the course during the summer. However, only a small portion of 5 furlongs from the actual course is used.

The flat course at Carlisle

In total, the racecourse hosts a combination of 21 flat and national hunt races.

The 9-hurdle track is a real test of stamina for horses. The gradual uphill climb on the final 4 furlongs ensures late surprises and an exciting finish.

Viewing Options at Carlisle Racecourse

The grandstand at Carlisle Racecourse boasts a collection of extensive restaurants and bars. The racecourse has seen a number of renovations and constructions over the years; The newest addition is the stunning Edinburgh Woollen Mill Grandstand, which was commissioned in 2002.

Since then, Carlisle grandstand has provided owners, racegoers and jockeys with state-of-the-art facilities. They have a wealth of hospitality packages, such as Cumbrian Punters, Party, and the Swift Restaurant package through its three enclosures.

The most premium among the three enclosures at Carlisle Racecourse is the Premier Enclosure. However, it is only available on selected race days.

When open, this enclosure allows direct access to an extensive collection of food outlets and bars. These include Patterson, Red Rum, and Family Bars and the Generals Bar & BBQ restaurant on the first floor of the grandstand. Guests also have a better view of the Parade Ring.

Next is the Grandstand and Paddock Enclosure, which allows access to all public areas on the ground floor; Especially the Bell Hall at the Edinburgh Woollen Mill grandstand.

This enclosure also features numerous bars and fast food outlets, including the Paddock Bar. The view of the Pre-Parade Ring and Parade Ring is not on par with the Premier Enclosure but is still excellent.

The last and the most relaxed of the enclosures is the Tattersalls Enclosure. Here you have access to the Bell Hall, Jubilee Grandstand along with Lower Terracing.

A small variety of catering services and bars are also available at the Tattersalls Enclosure. This offers food and snacks at more affordable prices.

Since Carlisle Racecourse has become one of the premium attractions in the region, the management has allotted an area of more than 250 acres just for visitor’s car parking. Charged parking is also available for 5 pounds per vehicle near the tracks.
