The racecourse is situated near the Cotswold Hills ridge in Prestbury Park, near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. The spectacular Cotswold Hills cast their shadow on the course.

Cheltenham Races Live Stream: Course Layout

The main racecourse consists of two individual courses sitting along with each other, the New Course and the Old Course.

The 2-mile long New Course features a downhill fence with most hurdles being jumped early in the course, leaving only two for the last 7 furlongs.

The tricky course also has a lengthier run-in than the comparatively meek Old course. For cross-country steeplechases, there is a cross-country course beautifully laid out inside the main course.

Cheltenham’s Colourful Past

The first flat race meeting in Cheltenham was reportedly organised in 1815 on Nottingham Hill and the first stakes on Cleeve Hill were run in 1818.

Horse Racing quickly gained popularity over the next decade and an annual two-day meeting (which included the 3-mile flat Gold Cup race) attracted over 30,000 racegoers.

In 1829, the racecourse was subjected to some hatred after the town’s only priest preached his congregation about the evils of horse racing; He forbade them from attending the races.

As a result, the racecourse did not see any action in 1830 and the only grandstand at the course was burnt down the following year. The racecourse was moved to its current location in 1831 to avoid further opposition.

Steeplechase races became an annual event at the current course in 1898.

The Jockey Club, previously the Racecourse Holdings Trust, was formed to ensure the future of racecourses, including the Cheltenham racecourse, remains secure. As of now, the club owns and looks after 14 racecourses in the UK.

The profits made at the racecourses are also religiously invested back to English horseracing sport to guarantee its continued success

Cheltenham Viewing

Whether visiting the racecourse on a crisp bright day in October or a clement May evening, Cheltenham’s charisma of the course can be unforgettable.

The racecourse is also home to the largest auditorium in the region, called The Centaur. The 2000-seat auditorium in the grandstand is a used for conferences and musical concerts, and the Steeplechase Hall of Fame is also housed inside it.

The course at Cheltenham is also frequently used for the graduation ceremony of the University of Gloucestershire.

Since becoming the home of National Hunt racing, the crowds visiting the course on festival days exceed 70,000 people. Thankfully, the 350 acres of the racecourse come in handy for accommodating this. In 2015, the racecourse inaugurated the Royal Princess Anne Stand with a capacity of 6,500 guests.

Enclosures

At present, there are three enclosures at the Cheltenham racecourse. The most exclusive of the three is the Club Enclosure, which is popular for providing breath-taking views of the course and surrounding fields.

Guests with the Club Enclosure badge will have a range of fine dining and refreshment options on the main grandstand as well as all the amenities available in the other two enclosures.

The Tattersalls Enclosure provides panoramic displays of the course from the grandstand’s viewing steps. Guests will have access to the Steeplechase Hall of Fame in The Centaur, the paddock, viewing steps of Winner’s Enclosure and a series of food outlets and bars.

The third enclosure, called the Best Mate Enclosure, is placed opposite to the main grandstand and offers a great view of the course. While this enclosure offers several restaurants and bars, it does not provide access to the Parade Ring and Shopping village.

Parking at Cheltenham is free on all race days apart from the festival when visitors wanting to park their vehicles near the track will have to pay 15 Pounds on the day of the festival and 8 Pounds in before-hand for reservation purposes.

Cheltenham Races Calendar Highlights

The 350 acres of the racecourse only sees the action from National Hunt horse racing and organises 16 race days annually.

It attracts crowds from all over Europe, including four days for the Cheltenham Festival.  The festival lasts from 16-19 March, and features numerous Grade 1 jump races.
