There are five Classic races on the UK horse racing calendar and the 2000 Guineas is the one to get them off the mark annually. Not only that, it forms part of the St Leger, Derby and Triple Crown.

It was Epsom Derby co-founder, Sir Charles Bunbury, who established both the 1000 and 2000 Guineas Stakes races, with the first race being run in April, 1809.

The 2000 Guineas became viewed as a classic thanks to the high level of prestige that it earned. It is so successful, in fact, that it has since been mimicked in several other countries including Ireland, Germany, France and Italy.
