Ascot was inaugurated in 1711 by royal horse racing enthusiast, Queen Anne. The Queen declared that the Berkshire location (formerly East Cote) was worthy of becoming a place for horse racing.

In the early 19th century, a formal dress code for the events at Ascot was made mandatory. Before this, guests were just expected to wear respectable attire.

By 1945, the only racing event that took place at the racecourse was the Royal meeting. More fixtures were gradually scheduled to take place on the course. Then, a change – In 1965 the first jump racing took place at the Ascot Racecourse.

Ascot Races: Course Layouts

The Ascot racecourse offers triangular right-hand flat and national hunt jump racing tracks for Group one races taking place round the year.

The flat course at Ascot Racecourse

With a seating capacity for over 70,000 guests, the Ascot Racecourse is the third-largest racecourse in the UK. Although this number is not the greatest, the stature and uniqueness of racecourse make it something quite special.

Ascot’s National Hunt course

In 2018, Ascot was awarded the Groundstaff Champion award in the Dual-Purpose Category by the Racecourse Association (RCA). The gong was for demonstrating appreciable levels of dedication, innovation and excellence throughout the year.

It was also the first racecourse in Europe to attract 500,000 annual racegoers. Quite a milestone. That said, it does have drawcards such as Royal Ascot and British Champions Day.

Ascot Races Viewing Options

Located in Ascot, a small town in East Berkshire about 10 miles from Windsor, the racecourse offers a two-tier grandstand. It also has a completely shaded seating setup for visitors, with hospitality services available all over the course.

Ascot racecourse has a total of four enclosures that put racegoers right in front of the live thrill-filled action.

All enclosures offer panoramic views of the course, but the most prestigious of all is the Royal Enclosure. This is reserved for membership holders only, generally the members of the Royal Family, their guests and notable sports celebrities.

The Royal Enclosure also provides private access to the balcony seating area on the fourth floor, which overlooks the Winning Post.

The second prestigious enclosure is the Queen Anne Enclosure. Named after the founder, it offers front row seats on the grandstand for uninterrupted views of the course. The grandstand also has a number of food and drink stalls for guests with a ticket to this enclosure.

The latest addition to the list of enclosures at Ascot is the Village Enclosure, which allows a less formal attire than the Queen Anne Enclosure. The fourth one, Windsor Enclosure, is generally considered by many as having leniency towards dress code. As a result, it is quite popular among racegoers because of its relaxed atmosphere.

Ascot Races Live Stream Calendar Highlights to Watch

The racecourse hosts a number of races annually, but the highlight of the year has to be Royal Ascot. It takes place in June every year, without which the British sporting calendar would not be complete.

Royal Ascot is duly attended every year by the monarch, The Prince of Wales and other important members of the Royal Family. The owner of the racecourse, Ascot Racecourse Ltd., also maintains close relations with the Royal family; This is aided due to the proximity of the racecourse to the Windsor Castle.

Hundreds of thousands of horseracing fans from all over the continent come flocking to the prestigious racecourse for the flagship Royal event. This makes it the best-attended race meeting in the whole of Europe and the UK.

Another important meeting that is proudly hosted by the Ascot Racecourse is the British Champions Day. This climactic day marks the end of the British flat racing season. The British Champions Series was first organised back in 2011 when it was regarded a huge success.

Since then, the Ascot Racecourse has been blessed to have the opportunity to host an event of this magnitude annually.
