Ayr Races – About the Course

Featuring an extensive history and claiming a variety of top awards, Ayr prides itself on being the only Grade 1 racecourse in Scotland.

Ayr racecourse has a very picturesque locale, and is right next to the Western House Hotel, a multi-award winning, four-star hotel. It is also one of one the largest conference centres, the Princess Royal Conference and Events Centre.

With two fine dining restaurants and a variety of hospitality suites, Ayr offers a touch of class and regularly hosts gala balls, banquets, conferences, and exhibitions.

History of Watching Horse Racing at Ayr

Although horse racing in Ayr dates back to 1576, the Ayr Racecourse’s first official meeting was not held until 1771. This took place at its original site in the Seafield area of the town.

Starting in the 16th century, Ayr originally had a much smaller racecourse in the Seafield area of the town. This racecourse is still used to this day as playing fields and is now affectionately called ‘the Old Racecourse’.

The patronage of landed gentry and members of the Caledonian Hunt was essential for early horse racing in Ayrshire. Members like the Duke of Eglinton provided not only funded but reared well-bred horses and introduced newer racing tactics to trainers.

Eventually, it was decided that the course was too small. Being less than a mile in the shape of an oval, it could not be extended as needed.

A new site for a larger course was identified for flat racing on Mr R A Oswald’s Auchincruive Estate and Mr J A Campbell’s Craigie Estate. It was moved again to become the racecourse we know today in 1907.

However, at this point, Ayr Racecourse only featured flat racing. It was almost another half a century when, in 1950, the first jumps course was established.

Even with a new jump course, it wasn’t until the Scottish Grand National was transferred to Ayr in 1966 (after the closure of Bogside Racecourse at Irvine) that it rose to prominence amongst jump-racing enthusiasts.

By this time, horse racing in Ayr had grown significantly and racegoers could expect year-round racing at the course.

Ayr Races: Course Layouts

Ayr Racecourse is in the shape of a left-handed oval and has a lengthy track of a little more than one and a half miles. It’s an ideal challenge for even the most skilled of gallopers.

Due to its closeness to the West coast, Ayr has the benefit of having a moderate climate and rich soil. This results in an optimal racing surface regardless of the time of year.

Ayr Races Video Live Streaming Calendar Highlights

Ayr’s most notable race meeting is the Western Meeting, established in 1824. By 1838, it became Britain’s most valuable race of the season for two-year-old horses and offered as much as £2000 in prize money.

The meet’s feature race, the Ayr Gold Cup, was made into a handicap race in 1855. It perseveres to this day and has even become the richest sprint handicap in Europe. It is the pinnacle of the flat season in Scotland.

In fact, competition between gallopers for the chance to compete in this race has become pretty fierce. As a result, in recent years two consolation races (the Ayr Silver Cup and the Ayr Bronze Cup) have been established for those who don’t make the cut.

In recent years, the Scottish Grand National has become the highlight of Ayr’s jump season and takes place in April. Two other graded races taking place on the day include the Scottish Champion Hurdle and the Future Champion Novices’ Chase.

Ayr hosts a variety of races around the year, all live streamed. The most notable races held at the racecourse include:
