The course is most widely known for the Derby Stakes, which is more commonly referred to as “The Derby”, the Oaks Stakes, most commonly referred to as “The Oaks” and the Coronation Cup, which are all Group 1 races all ran over the distance of 2,400m, or a mile and a half.

The course has a history of being associated with the Royal Family, and one of the Queen’s favourite pastimes is attending the Derby each year. Epsom Downs houses the third largest training facility in the United Kingdom, managed by Epsom trainers society.

As with many of Britain’s racecourses, the first recorded race occurred in the 17th century. The exact year however is disputed, with the first recorded race occurring in 1661.

The grave of a man named William Stanley records his death as “running the race fell from his horse and brake his neck” in the year 1625. Charles II had a particular interest in horse racing and was an avid spectator of the races at Epsom Downs.

Epsom is renowned as the debut venue of famous racehorse Eclipse, who would go on to have an undefeated career.

One of the most famous races of the year is the Group 1 race The Oaks. This was initially established by Edward Smith-Stanley, Earl of Derby, who in the year 1779 organised a race amongst him and his peers.

This race was considered successful, and the following year the Derby would be re-run.

Epsom Downs would gain further notoriety in 1913 when famous suffragette Emily Davison threw herself in front of King George V’s horse, Anmer, in an act of protest.

Epsom Downs Live Stream: Course Layout

The racecourse is unique in that it is located in a public area between Epsom, Tadworth and Langley Vale. People are able to watch the Derby free of charge for this reason, meaning that it used to be the most attended sporting event of the racing calendar.

It also features a unique U-shaped course with chutes allowing for sprint races over a distance of 5, 6 or 7 furlongs. It is a left-handed course with an undulating track.

The famous switchback course is considered by many the ultimate test of a thoroughbred. The Derby and Oaks are run over a mile and a half on a steep uphill climb followed by a sharp turn on the descent. Epsom Downs fixtures are usually able to quickly identify the best colts and fillies of the day.

The half-mile home straight is predominantly downhill before a steep incline in the last hundred yards. Due to the nature of the course, the five-furlong course has had some of the fastest-recorded times in racing.

Indigenous managed to achieve a time of 53.6 seconds hand-timed in 1960, and Spark Chief achieved a similar electrically timed run of 53.70 in 1983.

Epsom Downs Viewing

Epsom Downs racecourse can have a capacity of up to 130,000 when you account for the spectators who are able to view the event for free. They can all get a magnificent view of the course.

Epsom Downs features plenty of options however for paid hospitality services and spectator facilities.

The Moet and Chandon terrace is located within the Queen’s Stand and provides elevated views across the racecourse, being just a short walk away from the Parade Ring. The Queen’s Stand as a whole boasts a superb view over the winning post and the home straight.

The grandstand itself features private rooms and booking with a view over the winning post. The Upper Tattenham Enclosure has a great view over the home turn, also known as the Tattenham corner.

All of these facilities offer fast food, takeaway and sit in menus and various bars and after-race entertainment. Opposite from the stands is the picnic enclosure for people to still enjoy the races and provide their own hospitality.
