The first meeting at Ludlow races is usually in the first week of October and the last being in May. However, the course is not out of action for the rest of the year.

The centre of the course is in fact an 18-hole golf course which is very popular for golfers in the Shropshire area because it is one of the oldest of its kind locally.

Ludlow Live Stream: Course Layout

The racecourse itself is an oval-shaped, right-handed track with two separate routes, one for chases and one for hurdles. The hurdle course runs around the chase circuit and is a fair and open track, the bends of the course are spacious and unremarkable.

However, as the hurdle course is larger it does have some undulations and uphill/downhill patches, but these areas are rarely even noticed so it is very unusual for it to impact results.

The Ludlow National Hunt course

The chase course is quite different to the hurdle course, despite having fifty percent of the same track. The course is extremely sharp, and the straights are long and tiresome. That said, the most distinctive difference between the courses are the bends.

The two bends which separate the chase course from the hurdle course are extremely sharp and appear quite abrupt. It is key for runners to get a clear view approaching those bends otherwise they can catch the horses out.

With nine fences overall, the circuit is not the hardest to tackle. Therefore owners frequently choose to send runners to the track to test their speed rather than jumping ability.

Ludlow Racing Viewing Highlights

Ludlow Racecourse does host its very own feature race: the Forbra Gold Cup. The handicap chase is three miles long and for five-year-old horses and over.

The race is named after Forbra, a Ludlow-trained horse who won the Grand National in 1932. Not only that, but at impressive odds of 50/1 for local trainer Tom Rimell.

The gelding was never really going to be aimed at the Aintree blockbuster race. However, after beating Golden Miller (a five-time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner and the only horse to win both the Gold Cup and the National in the same year) a few months prior to the race, it seemed the most logical step.

Forbra never managed to replicate his success in the Grand National again; However, the Ludlow fan favourite did conclude his career without ever falling. That’s a mightily impressive feat for a horse that spent its entire career on jumps courses.

In 2020, the race (which is always hosted in February) was won by Head To The Stars who managed to see off a competitive pack by just over a length.

There are so many great memories from watching races at Ludlow. One of mine will be seeing Be Bop Buru win his first-ever race there in this Maiden Open National Hunt Race. The gelding discovered his love for testing conditions here and earned Richard Johnson a deserved victory.

Watching Horse Racing from Ludlow

The venue itself is unlike many others, with a mixture of modern touches amongst the traditional racecourse setting. The stands are made up of large arches to make for a pavilion-like setting. In addition, there’s a roof viewing area for those who want to see further than the rest.

The views at Ludlow are striking, whatever the angle. With the golf course in the centre, it means that there are lots of shrubs, trees and grass patches. All of this is well-kept by the greenkeepers and makes the perfect backdrop for the racing.

Ludlow Racecourse is very well accessible, just off the A49 and reachable from many small towns through roads as well. The venue is most certainly worth visiting Shropshire for. You’ll find top horses consistently visiting the track to test their speed and creating some very exciting races.

The course is free-draining which means that in the typical National Hunt season wet weather, the track does not become as wet and boggy as other tracks. Therefore the likelihood of meetings being abandoned is far lower.

A new winners enclosure was built in 2020 to allow all the worthy winners to be admired within. It’s an ideal spot for fans to take photos of the horses and congratulate winning owners and connections.
