Owned by the Arena Racing Company, Newcastle is one of the most highly-rated racing spots. The Northumberland weekend often brings in as much as 30 million pounds to the regional economy.

The racecourse has been in operation for over two centuries, although racing in Newcastle can be traced back to the early 17th century.

The course’s biggest meeting, the Northumberland Plate, was first hosted in 1883. Despite the relatively early date of its founding, the event drew massive amounts of attention.

In fact, the event became so popular that the miners in the many coal pits in the area were given a holiday just so that they could attend the race. Thus, the Northumberland Plate came to be known as “The Pitmen’s Derby” by the locals.

Newcastle Racecourse Layouts

These are the tracks that you’ll be able to see on the live-streamed video. A left-handed oval of a mile and three-quarters around, the course at Newcastle has a steady rise from the turn into the straight to the winning post. This means that there is an emphasis on the horses’ stamina.

Newcastle switched to an all-weather track in the winter of 2015 with a Tapeta surface. However, unlike most other all-weather tracks, in addition to being a circular course, it also has a floodlit straight mile.

A large part of what has made this racecourse so popular is its state-of-the-art facilities. Although its amenities are already highly distinguished, the Newcastle Racecourse administration continues to implement new structural and aesthetic enhancements.

A recent example of this is an £11 million investment which went towards improving facilities and building an all-weather track on the outer edges of the jumps track.

When it comes to the view, racegoers have a very clear view of the horses regardless of where they are positioned. Aside from the racecourse itself, punters are also able to appreciate the beautiful setting of the surrounding Gosforth Park estate.

Newcastle has a variety of bars and eating venues from fast food to fine dining on race days. It also has indoor space for conferences, exhibitions, meetings, and seminars. This racecourse tends to meet the needs of many.

A noteworthy example is the course’s own Ladies’ Day, which regularly brings in a crowd of more than 15,000 attendees from throughout the region.

History of Horse Racing in Newcastle

The earliest known record of racing in the Newcastle area took place on Killingworth Moor on March 17th, 1621. However, racing on the racecourse’s original location of Town Moor did not take place until 1721, an entire century later.

Racing continued in several different forms over the next 350 years. The first Northumberland Plate meeting did not take place until much later, in 1833. The event, gaining publicity at a rapid pace, is notable for bringing about a holiday for coal miners. It was (as mentioned above) affectionately called The Pitmen’s Derby.

The event continued to be held at this location until 1881 when the racecourse was moved to its current location in High Gosforth Park. This was done by the racecourse’s investors partly to promote the sport, and partly to get a return on their investment.

While flat racing had been the focus at Newcastle for the past few centuries, national hunt racing was permanently added as a fixture of the course in 1951.

Although racing continued without pause in Newcastle, the facilities had become worn and out-dated over the years. Thus, when Northern Racing acquired the course in 1994, they provided a much-needed financial injection. The £11 million that they invested went towards a new straight mile course, new stands, a new parade ring, and other new facilities for racegoers.
