Sandown Park Course Layouts & Viewpoints
The flat racing course at Sandown is a right-hand oval course of one mile and five furlongs with a stiff four-furlong run-in. Races are run across a broad spectrum of distances but generally demand stamina and grit, favouring high numbers on softer going.
The course is fair and suits a galloping type, especially with the five-furlong straight chute that steadily rises and intersects the larger oval-shaped circuit. The famous climb up the home straight typically filters out the non-stayers amongst the bunch.
When the going gets softer throughout the winter months some jockeys prefer to follow a line across to the stand side in the straight and up the far rail on the sprint course.
According to rider Jason Weaver, the finish sections represent a considerable challenge as well, with the business of the final furlong lending itself to front-running types.
The track is notable for also hosting National Hunt jumps racing to an equal standard: the jumps track is run along the same course but uses different entrance and exit points.
A tough uphill run-in of 300 yards places a premium on stamina, while eleven tough railway fences and six hurdles per circuit demand skilled and accurate jumpers.
Sandown Park is commonly regarded as a top-class jumping test for the country’s finest chasers, with gruelling conditions over the winter months often rendering the irregular hurdles more testing than the chase ones.
Jockey Aidan Coleman considers the complexion of the course extremely changeable and notes that ‘whilst getting into a nice rhythm is crucial, the ability to shorten up quickly and be agile are really important’.
Watching racing at Sandown Park is also accessible in just 15 minutes from Kempton Park racecourse.
Sandown Park Through Time
Sandown Park was the first purpose-built leisure course with enclosures in Britain and ranks among the newest compared to other UK courses, many of which emerged from the largely undocumented and vague mists of medieval times.
From the very beginning, the Sandown Park Executive were keen to maintain the highest standards of racing, clientele, and audience, being the first British racecourse to charge an entrance fee of half a crown to the middle-class locals.
The first meeting included the Grand National Hunt Chase, now staged at the annual Cheltenham Festival in March, and took place over three days starting on Thursday April 22nd.
A significant prize of £2,130 was awarded to the winner of Saturday’s Grand International Steeplechase, a gift surpassing that of even the most high profile contemporary races such as the Liverpool Grand National.
Appealing to well-to-do locals, Sandown Park was also the first course to build a members’ enclosure offering the finest views of the action.
Indeed, the early clientele were pleased by the high quality of the facilities and surface. One especially satisfied customer noted in 1879 ‘how pleasant it is once more to find ourselves within the Sandown Club Enclosure, under a genial sky and with all the well-known surroundings of pretty women, good luncheon and good sport’. Simply spiffing, what.
The course was closed during the First World War in line with the horseracing authorities’ nationwide suspension taking place from 1915 onwards.
After another temporary setback during the Second World War when it was requisitioned from 1940-45 by the War Department, Sandown came back stronger than ever. Once racing resumed the course began amassing its star-studded repertoire of key fixtures and started to attract the nation’s finest equine talent.
It has a strong royal connection, being Queen Elizabeth II’s mother’s favourite racecourse and a common backdrop for the success of her horses Arkle, Mill Reef, and Desert Orchid.
Racing to Watch Live from Sandown Park
Sandown’s top feature races now include April’s Bet 365 Gold Cup, won by Talkischeap in 2019, the Eclipse Stakes in July, a one mile and two-furlong Group 1 race bagged by Golden Horn in 2015, and the Tingle Creek Chase in December, won by Defi Du Seuil, trained by B J Heraghty and owned by P J Hobbs, collecting an astonishing prize of £84,405 in 2019.
The Coral Eclipse meeting in early July, in particular, routinely attracts a top lineup, with previous winners Giant’s Causeway, Falbrav, Sea The Stars, and Nathaniel practically household names.
The Tingle Creek has attracted various other celebrity racehorse winners such as Desert Orchid, Kauto Star, Viking Flagship, Flagship Uberalles, and Moscow Flyer.
