Sedgefield Upcoming Live Streamed Races
This National Hunt track has a history stretching back to the early 18th century. The course is famed for events such as October’s Durham National Handicap Chase, a key fixture in the jumps calendar.
Sedgefield Races Course Layout
Sedgefield is a small wedge-shaped course run left-handed in the fashion of the majority of British jumps courses. Complicated by sharp turns and undulating terrain, the course is considered a severe stamina test when the going gets soft.
Conditions are known to get particularly laboursome on the last section of the track. The finishing straight measures around three furlongs and features a notoriously steep descent. This is followed by an arduous climb to the winning post.
There are eight fences and five hurdles per circuit at Sedgefield. The the soft fences generally thought to be on the easier side for a National Hunt track.
According to jockey Mick Fitzgerald, a ‘fast and accurate jumper’ is typically the safest bet for racing at Sedgefield; But the softness of the fences tends to allow jockeys to get away with riding somewhat less graceful horses than required for other tracks with stiffer fences.
These benevolent fences also have the positive side-effect of lowering casualty rates and fallers. That’s an aspect especially rare in and around the home straights of such courses.
When the harsh northern winter sets in, underfoot conditions become sodden. Jockeys tend to favour taking the ‘golden highway’ by the stand-side rail as the quickest racing line. This is to head back to the paddock past the entrance gate onto the track.
That strategy is particularly useful for hurdle races; It is of key importance for riders and punters alike looking to bag the victory.
The entire track is compact and tight. The hurdles track running down the outside of the chase course particularly sharp. Jockey Aidan Coleman has commented that there is not much space for horses from the outset, so position is of key importance as there is often ‘plenty of pace on’.
A Brief History of Sedgefield Races
The earliest signs of racing at Sedgefield date back to 1732. However, owing to a general lack of documentation, not much is known of these earlier races. In 1804, Ralph Lambton of Durham nobility established the Ralph Lambton Hunt and formed a club at the Hardwick Arms, a local inn. The course formed part of the Sands Hall Estate, home to the prominent Ord family.
As with many British courses, the sport was backed in the local area by wealthy benefactors such as Ralph Brandling, then owner of Gosforth Park in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Officially recognised National Hunt action began to be recorded from 1846 onwards.
Prior to the First World War, Sedgefield held a single two-day meeting every March. The track survived the turbulence of the war and once racing resumed in 1920 it expanded to host a three meeting-calendar, the most popular of which being a Bank Holiday race day.
The post-war reopening was blemished only by the death of Richard Ord, the squire of Sands Hall. Fixtures have slowly grown over the years and today Sedgefield hosts around twenty annual meetings.
Despite reforming under a new management company in 1927, Sedgefield Racecourse suffered from a keenly-felt lack of funding for much of the century. Broadcaster Sir Clement Freud gave the site a tongue-in-cheek appraisal as ‘all field and not much sedge’.
Upon his appointment in 1977, however, Chairman Frank Scotto began a stream of steady renovation amid rumours of closure. Over the course of his tenure, the old pre-war tin huts were removed and upgraded to modern bar and restaurant areas.
The Sedgefield Pavilion was built in 1991, followed closely by the construction of the Theakston Suite in 1995. Around the same time, Sedgefield began to develop its reputation as a conference centre and all-purpose venue: a commercially driven pursuit that continues to represent the majority of its income today.
Further improvements such as a top-class weighing room complex approaching the turn of the century were set back by a tragic incident in 1999; Three riderless horses were loosed up the chase track during a Novices’ Chase; This resulted in the death of three horses and a sizeable helping of negative media attention.
Controversy continues to this day with six horses killed over a series of six weeks in early 2011. This rightly prompted criticism from the Animal Abuse Injustice and Defence Society – and further renovations.
Since 2001, Sedgefield has been part of the Northern Racing Company. It is now under control of the mammoth Arena Racing Company, receiving over £600,000 for further track updates.
