Steeped in history and situated next to the famed Warwick Castle, it has played host to National Hunt racing since its first recorded use in 1694.

Warwick is notable for being the first National Hunt track to introduce a jump race into its programme. This turned out to be a seismic shift in the sport that has established National Hunt as what it is known for today.

The racecourse lies on the St Mary’s Land park and doubles as a nine-hole golf course and driving range, as well as a popular local dog-walking spot.

Warwick’s Eventful Past

The fault line running under the course is reported to have been the cause of the 2000 Warwick earthquake. In fact, it is responsible for the sandstone hill on which the town itself is based.

The town was ravaged by the Great Fire of Warwick in September 1694. The sport was subsequently introduced to the market town at the turn of the 18th century in a bid to attract wealthy investors to help rebuild the area.

The official inaugural race was held in 1707, but it was not until 1808 that the first stand was built onsite, parts of which remain today. Warwick garnered fame as the joint opener of the flat racing season throughout the 19th century along with Coventry.

The 1800s saw consistent flat and National Hunt races such as the Castle Park Stakes; This became popular among locals who paid two pence for admission. In the 1870s Warwick was plagued by a betting storm that reputedly scared away the local gentry.

Prosecution was threatened by local authorities until the issue was closed after being addressed in the Town Hall by MP Arthur Peel.

The course is now known as a testing ground for the Nationals which fall later in the season. It has welcomed such famous guests as jockeys Lester Piggott and John Francombe, as well as celebrity racehorse Red Rum in 1967.

This year also saw the start of Warwick’s commercial bond with The Jockey Club, the largest horse-racing organisation in the United Kingdom.

Today, Warwick is one of 15 courses operated by the club and features alongside the prestigious names of Aintree, Cheltenham, and Epsom Downs.

Warwick Races Course Layouts

The course is left-handed and about a mile and five furlongs in circumference, with a short run-in of 240 yards. It is broad in shape with some moderately sharp turns and has been lauded as a fine steeplechase track.

National Hunt

The relatively short run-in favours front-running horses with a fair amount of toe. The back straight of the steeplechase course features five quick-fire fences; These are known for their stiffness and the undulating terrain is known to trouble all the but the steadiest of horses.

Rider Aidan Coleman has labelled the course as ‘basically a sharpish flat track’, considering the fences of the back straight as the most crucial part of the course due to their difficulty. The sentiment is echoed by rider Mick Fitzgerald, who considers Warwick one of the ‘toughest in Britain for a novice’.

Leading jumps trainer Nicky Henderson has also previously commented on the quality of the course. His take was that ‘Warwick is a very fair course that has good, competitive jumps racing, especially in the novice chase and novice hurdle departments.’

Flat racing at Warwick used to make use of the course’s spur both in five-furlong races and as the starting line for longer races. However, in the early 2010s the flat course came under fire with a series of complaints surrounding its soundness.

The flat course at Warwick races

The controversy was escalated after well-known jockey Ryan Moore announced he would be avoiding the course after an injury caused by a fall during a flat race.

Warwick ultimately stepped down as a flat course in May 2014 after the fall and subsequent death of Artful Lady during that month’s race meeting.

Officials admitted to a loss of confidence in the going of some parts of the track and were forced to transfer four flat fixtures to the nearby Carlisle. Jockey Club Director Ian Renton then announced their plan to terminate flat racing and focus on National Hunt only in order to assume a clear identity in the future.

Top Races to Watch from Warwick

Nowadays, Warwick is home to a busy annual calendar of 18 racedays; Many of these are televised by frequent sponsor Racing TV. These are the same races that you will see live streamed on the bet365 live stream – without the subscription cost.

The track now prides itself on having one of the lowest fall rates in Britain.

Meetings are staged throughout the jumps season from September onwards; It features events like the mid-January Classic Chase, won in recent years by the likes of Hey Big Spender, Shotgun Paddy, and Hawkes Point, standing out as highlights.

January’s Grade 2 Novices’ Hurdle is another popular feature event, won by the likes of Inglis Drever and The New One.

Warwick is perhaps best known for the Kingmaker Novices’ Chase in February. It’s well-regarded as a breeding ground for future stars and a trial of sorts for national events and the Arkle Chase.

Keen punters are known to keep a close eye on the Kingmaker for good reason; Past winners Flagship Uberalles, Voy Por Ustedes, and Finian’s Rainbow have proven its merit as a launchpad for star horses.
