Worcester Upcoming Live Streamed Races

Previously host to year-round racing, Worcester now operates a summer-orientated race day calendar. This runs from May to October as a precaution against the common flooding of the adjacent River Severn. The Severn has been known to burst its banks during the winter months.

Worcester played host to flat racing until 1966 but is now an exclusive National Hunt track. The course is oval-shaped and left-handed, like the majority of British tracks, and is about thirteen furlongs in length.

It is situated in Worcester city centre on the east bank of the River Severn and to the north of the Worcester Bridge. The track has nine fences and six hurdles, with a 220-yard run-in.

Owing to its relatively easy turns and oval shape, Worcester has gained a reputation as a stellar spot to introduce novice horses. Many leading West Country trainers opt to run their younger horses there to gather valuable race day experience.

Famous horses such as Iris’ Gift, the 2004 Cheltenham Festival Stayers’ Hurdle champion, have won their first career starts at Worcester.

Riders agree on the comparative ease of the track; Its lack of sharp turns, easy navigation, and softer, portable fences combine to form what jockey Mick Fitzgerald has described ‘a good galloping track, with very fair fences and lovely smooth turns.’

Fitzgerald considers the course a top choice for a new novice chaser and points to previous winners such as Morley Street as proof of the class of horse typically trained on the track. Quick conditions over the summer typically favour those who ride handily, despite the long home straight.

Jockey Aidan Coleman has also commented on the relative ease of the course. He labelled it ‘one of the most galloping tracks available for summer jumpers.’

Coleman also recalls the importance of not falling too far back coming up to the long home straight, especially when the ground is quick in the height of summer.

WorcesterThrough Time

The course endearingly known to locals as Pitchcroft has held racing since at least 1718; This ranks Worcester as one of Britain’s oldest racing towns. Initially holding flat racing, with a 4-day flat meeting established in 1755, the course soon began to branch into jumps racing as well, holding a meeting in the autumn.

Throughout the 19th century several meetings such as the Worcester Stakes and the Gold Cup began to grow in popularity.

The site has been known to host plenty of other sports alongside horse racing. In 1824, a bare-knuckle boxing competition was held here.

And from 1893 the Worcester Rugby Club began playing on a field enclosed by the track. They were joined shortly after by Worcester City Football Club who played on the Severn Terrace until the start of the 1905 season.

Course improvements date as early as 1880 when a since-abolished figure-of-eight track was built. Winter jumps racing was once a popular feature of the annual calendar. An example is the record 8-race, 229-runner card in January 1965.

However, in 1995 the course began to carve out its niche as a leading summer jumps course; It launched a summer calendar having discontinued its flat racing programme in 1966.

Owing in no small part to its summertime fixtures and a central location in the busy town, the racecourse is quite popular locally; Events such as Ladies Day and Family Fun day counting as annual highlights.

With racing usually ending in October, the course doubles up as a general hospitality venue. It plays host to Christmas parties, galas, and concerts over the winter months.

The course is owned by the Worcester City Council but is currently leased to the Arena Racing Company. Arena is the mammoth corporation in charge of 39% of Britain’s annual horseracing fixtures.

Worcester is one of sixteen racecourses the Arena group operates and has been led by Executive Director Jenny Cheshire since 2001.
