The racecourse hosts National Hunt race meetings between the months of May and August every year. 

A total of nine race days are organised annually. This starts with the Whit Holiday weekend and the racing season ends on the August Bank Holiday weekend. 

The racecourse is considered to be smaller than others in the UK. However, it often makes up for it with the third-largest crowds of any jump racecourses; A maximum attendance of over 20,000 racegoers during a popular race day isn’t uncommon. 

Cartmel Races Live: Course Layout, Conditions

The shape of the course is a narrow and sharp left-handed oval; It differs from many other racecourses of the same category due to the home straight, which dissects the oval track.

Known for its unique, almost rectangular shape, it provides an experience unlike many other traditional, oval-shaped courses. The course layout is left-handed and has a circumference of just over a mile. The circuit is compact, featuring sharp bends and a long home straight that veers off from the main circuit and threads through the centre.

One unique characteristic of the Cartmel track is its lengthy run-in, which, at over four furlongs (a distance of 3 miles and 2 furlongs;), is the longest in the country. This extended run-in means that horses and jockeys need to time their challenge perfectly; if they push for the front too soon, they risk being caught before reaching the finish line.

Horses with strong stamina attributes often excel on this track, as they can sustain their run down the final stretch. Those that can handle tight turns also have an advantage given the sharp bends on the circuit.

In terms of conditions, Cartmel Racecourse drains reasonably well, but like any turf track, the going can be affected by the weather. In periods of sustained rainfall, the ground can become quite soft, favouring horses who perform well under such conditions. On the other hand, dry weather will result in a faster surface, more suited to speedier types.

One interesting fact about Cartmel is that it only hosts National Hunt racing (jumps), with a focus on steeplechase races. Therefore, a horse’s jumping ability is an important factor to consider when assessing their potential performance at Cartmel.

Why Punters Like Watching at Cartmel

The earliest accounts of racing at the Cartmel Racecourse date back to the year 185. However, it is not certain if the course held annual race meetings before this. 

As early as the 15^th century, monks from the nearby Priory church organised mule races. It’s believed that the current location of the course was used for this entertainment. 

The course was financially supported by local property owners of the time and was initially a race track for amateur jockeys until World War II. The racing system was modernised and expanded by the 20^th century and a number of annual races were added to the racecourse’s sporting calendar.

Cartmel Racecourse is situated in the ceremonial county of Cumbria. It’s in Cartmel village which is 1.5 miles North-East of the River Eea in the town of Grange-over-Sands. 

With the scenic English Lake District in its background, the course brings the thrill of Britain’s classic jump racing in its original setting. Some nearby attractions in the Cartmel village are the Priory Church of Saint Mary and Saint Michael. Oh, and not to forget the world-famous Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding shop.

There are also a number of artisan food outlets in the village. These give visitors the real taste of quality food made from fresh locally sourced produce.

Viewing from Cartmel Races

The grandstand features a panoramic viewing option of the race track and fine dining selections. Most of the food outlets inside the grandstand at Cartmel are organised just before the meetings and are closed again after the races end in the evening.

Shops in the Cartmel village are within walking distance from the course. Many like to take a stroll to the village, which is often included as part of a typical race day.

The grandstand also includes a flexible indoor suite which has the seating capacity for up to 140 people. The facilities available for racegoers, trainers, jockeys, and owners have been greatly improved since the 19^th century. That said, the grandstand is considered small by comparison.

Further development and expansion are yet to be carried out.

Currently, at Cartmel, there are two enclosures available for guests to choose from, the Paddock Enclosure and the Course Enclosure. The Paddock Enclosure houses the grandstand & paddock, Parade Ring & Winners Enclosure, Louis Roederer restaurant, and the Marquee Village. 

Enclosures

The main office of the racecourse is also located inside this enclosure. Guests with Paddock Enclosure tickets are permitted to cross the track to the Course Enclosure and its facilities. Racegoers do not have to dress to the nines, although they are encouraged to do so. 

The Course Enclosure is located on the other side of the finishing straight and opposite to the Paddock Enclosure. Features at this enclosure include the betting stands, fairground, bandstand, and a refreshment area. 

If you like, transfers to the Paddock Enclosure are possible with an upgrade ticket which is available at the crossing. Both enclosures include essential toilet facilities to the guests.

With its funfair and large party crowds, Cartmel combines National Hunt races with an opportunity to socialise with fellow racegoers.

Cartmel Races Live Streaming 2024 Calendar Highlights

Here’s what you can expect to watch on the Cartmel races live stream, which covers every race at this course.

The racing festival commences with the Whit Holiday Weekend Meeting in the mid of May and continues till the August Bank Holiday Meeting. The course holds a number of races throughout this three-month season, but three races have precedence over others. 

The first is the Cumbria Crystal Cup which is staged in the July or Barbeque meeting. The August meeting features a hurdle race called the Cartmel Cup; It also has a steeplechase known as the Cavendish Cup, named after Lord Cavendish.
