Goodwood Upcoming Live Streamed Races

Goodwood is owned and operated by the family of Charles Gordon-Lennox, the 11th Duke of Richmond.

The course is named after the seat of the Dukedom, Goodwood House which is located nearby. It is renowned for being the host of the Qatar Glorious Goodwood Festival in late July, which is one of the highlights of the British racing calendar.

Three of the UK’s top annual Group 1 flat races take place here as well, the Sussex Stakes, the Nassau Stakes and the Goodwood Cup.

The course is notable for featuring the first-ever flag start in British racing, with Lord George Bentinck pushing for it in the late 18th century. This came after an awful misunderstood start by jockey Sam Arnull, due to an elderly deaf starter with a speech impediment.

The racecourse was established over 200 years ago on the edge of South Downs. The Duke of Richmond introduced the course to his estate to benefit his officers in the Sussex Militia in 1802, as he was the Colonel.

Originally, the course was named “The Harroway” and holds a deserved reputation as one of the world’s most beautiful racecourses with astonishing views over the Duke’s nearby estate.

Goodwood House and the grounds are not only renowned as a horseracing venue. It is the site of the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed. The grounds also feature a Goodwood Circuit motorsport Track, with Chichester/Goodwood Airport also featuring a Goodwood Revival air show and flying school.

What to Watch: Goodwood Race Streaming Highlights

The Sussex Stakes is certainly one of the most prestigious races to take place at the venue. It is a listed Group 1 race for horses aged three years and over.

It is run over a distance of 1 mile and takes place usually on the second day of the Glorious Goodwood Festival. A version of this event has ran since 1841 with the original two-year-old 6 furlong race.

The Goodwood Cup also holds notability however, as the second leg of the Stayers Triple Crown also featuring the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Doncaster Cup.

This race is held on the opening day of the Glorious Goodwood festival every year.

Goodwood Course Layout

The course layout is unique in that it features a straight of six furlongs in length, which is the layout of the “Stewards’ Cup”. The first furlong is run uphill with the majority of the final five being ran downhill, encouraging greater speeds on the descent.

The far end of the straight features a very tight right-handed loop, allowing for longer distance starts. The 2m 5f Cup Course starts close to the winning post, with horses running outwards on the straight before looping back around and back down the straight.

The course is only used for flat racing due to its layout, and the loop features many sharp turns and severe undulations in the ground.

Viewing at Goodwood

Trundle Iron Age hill fort is located just to the north and offers a very attractive setting as it operates as an informal grandstand. The hill fort offers spectators views of the entire course, with the downside being limited visibility due to adverse weather conditions, particularly its close location to the sea allowing for fog and sea mist.

There are a number of spectator options of the wonderful course, including; the Richmond Enclosure, the Gordon Enclosure, and the Lennox Enclosure. These are of course named after the Duke of Richmond, and the family surname of Gordon-Lennox.

The Richmond Enclosure is the premier option for racegoers, with fantastic views opposite the winning post and parade ring. Stylish bars are on offer and a strict dress code applies.

Covered seating is offered as an option in the March Grandstand. The Gordon Enclosure is slightly less formal than the Richmond Enclosure.

Visitors are granted access to the parade ring with standing viewing within the March Grandstand, as well as covered seating in the Sussex Stand, allowing spectators views of the racing from near the winning post.

The Earls Lawn during the Qatar Goodwood festival also offers private bars and live music.

The Lennox Enclosure is the most relaxed by far, and is regarded as a family enclosure owing to the children’s playground and the picnic area, allowing great views of the racecourse.
