Hamilton Park Racecourse is a flat course operating out of Hamilton, just to the south of Glasgow. It runs its meetings between the months of May and October.

Hamilton Park Upcoming Live Streamed Races
Racing dates back as far as 1782 at the venue and the course plays a significant role in the Scottish racing calendar. Notable races include the Glasgow Stakes and the Lanark Silver Bell.
Meetings have been held at Hamilton Park since August 1782, where the first evidence of racing nearby took place outside the town of Chatelherault. The initial race had a purse of 50 guineas and was run over four miles with the horse belonging to the Duke of Hamilton, Disguise winning after two heats.
Racing took place informally with racers north of the border up until 1887 where Sir John Astley, a whisky baron, began building a new course at Hamilton, close to Hamilton Palace.
After the initial meeting, a steeplechase was constructed and completed in December 1888 with the first chase happening there. Meets occurred continuously up until 1907, where disputes over betting caused the course to cease operations.
It wasn’t until after the war where Sir Loftus Bates began to relaunch the course.
Since this relaunch, the course has played host to a number of key firsts in racing, including the first evening meeting in July 1947, and the first morning meeting in May 1971.
The racecourse in its current iteration opened in 1926, and since 1973 has been operated and maintained by the Hamilton Park Trust, which reinvests all profits it makes into course development.
Hamilton Park Course Layout
The Hamilton Park course is a right-handed one with sharp turns, and features an undulating terrain. There are steep gradients into a hollow about three furlongs from the winning post, making the finish a severe uphill battle.
The steep run to the bottom of the dip is notorious for causing jockeys to race too early, meaning mounts should be settled early on to achieve highly in the race.
It is an oval course with a distance of 1 mile 5 furlongs and 9 yards, with adaptations being made for races at a longer distance.
Races to Watch Live from Hamilton Park
Regarding the history of the Lanark Silver Bell, there is evidence that the history of the racecourse goes back even further, as early as 1170 at Lanark, with a Silver Bell prize being paid by King William the Lion of Scotland.
It is widely regarded as one of the oldest prizes in sport. Having been restored in 2008, previously it had been held at Lanark racecourse before moving to Hamilton Park in 1977.
The present bell dates back to the 17th century with the original being presumed destroyed.
The principal race held at Hamilton Park is the Glasgow Stakes which is a listed flat race restricted to three-year-olds. The race is ran over a distance of 1 mile, 3 furlongs and 15 yards and takes place every July.
The race was originally run at York before moving to Hamilton Park in 2006. The record-holding Jockey in this race is Pat Eddery, winning on five occasions in 1976, 1979, 1980, 1992 and 1993.

In 1993 the horse Commander in Chief also went on to win the Epsom Derby. The leading trainer is Sir Michael Stoute with 7 wins in 1978, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1998 and 2006. Quite a feat!
Hamilton Park has a reputation for as well as providing quality racing, as having fine entertainment for racegoers. Jockey visits occur with the likes of Frankie Dettori, and live music performances help to establish Hamilton Park as a high profile concert venue.
2019 also marked a glorious year for the racecourse, with many prestigious industry awards going their way, such as the ROA Gold Standard Award (which they have held since 2008), VisitScotland 5 Star Visitor Attraction, RCA Showcase Winner for operational excellence, and a finalist in the Racing Post Readers’ Award.
Viewing from Hamilton Park
As well as the Grandstand, which offers a wonderful view of the winning post, the racecourse offers various hospitality options for spectators who watch the race live.
Recently refurbished private boxes are available on the second floor of the Grandstand. Offering bar and food services for between 8 and 40 guests, offering TV views of the race, and a balcony overlooking the winning post.
Duke’s Restaurant allows spectators to dine in luxury with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the final furlong of the track.
The restaurant marquee is also available, with the Club Lawn and Parade Ring Marquees offering private bars, betting facilities and an outdoor seating area with spectacular views of the racecourse, allowing you to get up close and personal with the racing.
