Huntingdon Races Live Stream: Course Layout

The course is a large oval shape with long and expansive bends. With nine fences on the steeplechase course and five flights on hurdles per circuit on the hurdles, the right-handed course makes the flats in between obstacles crucial.

Huntingdon’s National Hunt course

The emphasis of the track is on speed rather than stamina, unlike most National Hunt tracks. Therefore the course that it suits best is usually ex-flat horses.

As long as they can take on the obstacles, they are able to flourish in between. Nowadays, horses like Goshen would do well at this track.

The bigger-built and more typical National Hunt horses tend to struggle at the course. This is because their qualities generally lie in jumping rather than travelling. Those types only seem to benefit when the ground has become soft/heavy and it is their preferred conditions.

Up until 2008, the course also had a tricky water jump. This was never the most popular of obstacles, often leading to fallers and sometimes injuries.

As a result, the course took the decision to fill the course. But Huntingdon was not the only course to fill the water jumps at that time.

After a fatal fall at Ludlow to one of Jonjo O’Neill’s horses, East Tycoon, the owner released a heartfelt plea. He asked for courses to fill their water jumps in, which led to many courses taking action.

Huntingdon Races Calendar highlights

The Huntingdon course does not host many renowned races. However, its trademark race, the Grade 2 Peterborough Chase, does draw large crowds every year.

The Peterborough Chase is two miles and three furlongs long with sixteen fences overall. The chase takes place in December and is open for horses that are four years old or older who are all competing for a significant chunk of the £65,000 prize fund.

In 2020 the race was won by Nicky Henderson’s Top Notch. That was after seeing off the challenge from fast-finishing Kauto Riko and Kauto Star Novices’ Chase winner La Bague Au Roi.

Being located so close to Newmarket, home of many large, significant stables, the novice events throughout the year prove popular.

This is a staple of Huntingdon Racecourse, with organisers using the location as a great way of encouraging better quality races at the track. It also helps to encourage more crowds into the grandstands.

The grandstand at Huntingdon Racecourse was the centre of attention in 2018 for the wrong reasons. A fire broke out in the top of the stand

This led to 25 firefighters from the Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service dousing the flames stemming from the hospitality boxes. Thankfully, everyone evacuated the building safely.

Despite the fire, the grandstand was restored, and it is still the hub of Huntingdon Racecourse.

Views at Huntingdon

The views at the course are immense and quite picturesque, with the grandstand immediately in front of the finishing post.

Racegoers can see all the way to the home bend from there, and the whole track. They also with the help of the large screens televising the race in the background.

Within the oval course, there is a large lake which has allowed for some mesmerising photographs. The course is surrounded by acres of fields and trees to give a very natural feel to the venue.

If you do get along to the course instead of watching on a live stream, Huntingdon Racecourse has all of the facilities on offer for a great day out.

Despite being quite a small racecourse, Huntingdon is well worth the trip to Cambridgeshire. The track, without fail, has a brilliant set of horses racing. Plus, the stands aren’t jam-packed and so allow for comfortable viewing and stress-free experience.
