Kelso Upcoming Live Streamed Races

The sometimes harsh Scottish weather is matched by the build of the Kelso course; This makes it the toughest of travels in the winter.

The remote course is still widely popular amongst owners. That’s largely due to the quality of the track and how it will push their horses to the maximum. The beautiful, picturesque surroundings are an added bonus.

Kelso Races Course Layout

Kelso Racecourse is made up of a chase course and a hurdle course. These combine to form a large square course. Both tracks are left-handed and quite flat, with a heavy emphasis on stamina. 

All corners are relatively sharp and the distance between jumps are extensive. Those who flourish at the course are always the best travellers. Despite being a predominantly winter-used course, when the weather hasn’t turned the surface heavy/soft, the track can be quite sharp.

In 2012, the last obstacles on both tracks were moved closer to the finish. This switch was in a bid to take the emphasis off the flat patches and rather on to the obstacles being tackled. That was after feedback was received from jockeys on how long the final straight felt. 

Despite the final obstacle now being within two furlongs of the finish, the flat straights can still retain that never-ending feeling.  The reason is that the ground becomes very soft and sluggish,

The result is immense tiredness for the horses. This may justify why Kelso’s chase course has one of the highest casualty rates of UK racecourses.

Kelso Racing Calendar Highlights

The track hosts three significant races in the season: The Premier Kelso Hurdle, the Premier Chase and the Morebattle Hurdle.

The Premier Kelso Hurdle is a 2m2f race run out in late February and is a Class 1 (Grade 2). It is often targeted by novices looking to take the step up in class to black-type company.

In 2020, the winner was Ruth Jefferson’s Clondaw Caitlin who battled to a five-length victory.

The Premier Chase is two miles and seven furlongs long and is run often a few days after the hurdle.

Recently, two-time Many Clouds Chase winner Definitly Red cruised to a 14-length victory on heavy ground. All five runners finished exhausted after battling against cold winds and light rain.

Another noteworthy race at Kelso is the Morebattle Hurdle. The race is specifically for 4-year-olds and over. It is 2m 2f long and, again, run in February.

One of the recent winners of the race was We Have A Dream in 2019. He readily battled to a victory at ¼ odds. The race was abandoned in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But low-odds favourites have not always been victorious in the race. In 2010, Quwetwo recorded the races most memorable result. He outran his 7/1 odds when he beat Nicky Henderson’s Zaynar, who was available at 1/14 odds under Barry Geraghty.

Watching Live at Kelso

Many jockeys are fond of the Kelso Racecourse due to its spectacular views throughout the journey. Being quite an isolated venue, the views from the grandstand are scenic and natural. There are sights of the Scottish hills and forests visible from all angles. 

But looking out of the grandstand is not the only picturesque sight. The building itself is also a stunning piece of architecture. 

The course has retained its main grandstand from when the course originally opened in 1822. However, now it has been expanded on both sides for structural purposes and to accommodate more racing fans as the course has grown in popularity.

Whether you are a racing fan or not, the experience at Kelso is always a positive one. There are no fancy and renovated winner’s enclosures or vast modern buildings where locating yourself is a struggle. Everything is traditional. 

The course is placed in the heart of the Scottish countryside. Horse racing fans can enjoy the views, whilst watching the tough and determined performances throughout the day. Kelso Racecourse is recommended to anyone who wants a true day out for ‘proper racing’.

This one should get you excited for watching the Kelso races live stream action. Watch Peddlers Cross cruise to victory at Kelso back in 2011. The race took place as he prepared for a Gold Cup run a month later at Cheltenham. However, the gelding could only manage second to Anibale Fly there.
