Being such a regular meeting on the overall racing calendar, the Surrey-based course hosts some of the country’s most important meetings for owners.

The track hosts trials for some of the most significant races of the year as well as some lower-level races. It’s then that owners and jockeys are able to truly learn all about their horses.

Lingfield Park Course Layouts

Due to its ability to hold every form of racing, Lingfield is a frequent meeting throughout the year. The all-weather track was the first of its kind in the UK and it hosted the country’s first all-weather meeting in 1989.

National Hunt

Lingfield’s jumps course is a left-handed track. Being a National Hunt circuit, it comes as no surprise to hear that the track is often heavy/soft.

However, at Lingfield this is more significant as the ground does become incredibly boggy and sticky. This, in turn, makes the short and straight-forward fences seem a lot higher.

The National Hunt course you’ll see on the Lingfield Races live stream

The triangle-shaped circuit does not have the sharpest of turns. However, it is often beneficial to have running room on the home bend as traffic can build up and give front-runners time to extend their lead.

The Flat Course at Lingfield

In contrast, Lingfield’s turf flat track is incredibly sharp and rounded. The circuit is also left-handed but rather circle-like.

However, it is intercepted with a long, extended straight for seven furlong, six furlong and five furlong races.

The Lingfield flat course

The nippy track is favoured by the front-running horses as the downhill bend coming on to the home straight can give them the momentum to pull away from the pack and go clear.

Due to the tightness of the track, Lingfield is often regarded as quite a biased track. This is due to the advantage of being drawn high for the shorter trips, therefore being closer to the stands rail.

All Weather Racing

The all-weather track is placed just inside of the turf track, making it another sharp circuit. The track is only used in the winter months due to its polytrack surface making it feasible for all conditions.

Usually only heavy rainfall or battering winds causing all-weather meetings to be cancelled.

Again, the course is left-handed and fairly flat, with rising ground on the back straight leading to a small sloped bend coming on to the straight.

Lingfield Races Viewing Highlights

The most notable races that Lingfield Park Racecourse hosts are the Winter Derby, the Oaks Trial and Derby Trial

The Winter Derby usually takes place in February/March and is open for four-year-olds and above. The one mile and two furlong race has been an event since 1998 and it was won by Dubai Warrior in 2020. That was the deadly partnership of Frankie Dettori and John Gosden, who also both won in 2019 with Wissahickon.

The Lingfield Oaks Trial is hosted in May for three-year-old fillies only. The race is one mile and three furlongs long and is used by owners to see where their horses stand in comparison to others. This, therefore, allows them to judge whether they want to go for the Oaks later in the season.

Miss Yoda was the 2020 winner for jockey Robert Havlin and owner John Gosden. The filly’s display was incredibly promising after getting there in the dying strides . That was after missing the break and running green in the early stages.

Derby Trial

Finally, the Lingfield Derby Trial is also raced in May. The flat listed race is used as a runout for owners in preparation for the Epsom Derby.

The race is specifically for three-year-old colts and geldings and is run over one mile and three furlongs. In 2020, the race (which took place in June due to the coronavirus pandemic) was won by English King under the whip of Tom Marquand.
