Musselburgh Upcoming Live Streamed Races

Formerly known as Edinburgh Racecourse, the site has been granted several awards by the Racecourse Association. Musselburgh has even beaten the much bigger Ascot Racecourse to the Dual Purpose Award at the Neil Wyatt Racecourse Groundstaff Awards.

The Musselburgh racecourse encompasses both flat racing and national hunt fixtures, but its most popular and valuable races are all handicaps.

Musselburgh Races: Course Layouts

Musselburgh’s round course is a right-handed, sharp oval that is approximately a mile and a quarter in circumference with a four-furlong straight. Aside from a few minor undulations and a slight rise throughout, the track is essentially flat.

The obstacles are evenly laid out for the jumps course and have either three hurdles or four fairly stiff fences down each straight.

Due to the sharp nature of its corners, being able to manage bends is an essential skill at this track. Thus, handy types have the advantage on this course and are much more likely to take the win than gallopers.

More than Racing

Watch the live streamed video carefully to see a nine-hole golf course situated in the middle of the racecourse. This dates back to 1672; Musselburgh is one of a very limited number of courses that features leisure and sporting amenities.

For most of the racecourse’s lifetime, the vast majority of racegoers have been men. However, with the introduction of Ladies’ Day in 2004, it has attracted a fairer balance of the genders by appealing to a wider audience.

Since then, Ladies’ Day at Musselburgh has become one of the largest events on the sporting calendar in Scotland. It has even earned the prestige of becoming the first Scottish horse racing event to sell out in advance.

Depending on the size of the racegoers party, Musselburgh has three hospitality options available; And all of these give a sweeping view of the course: The Queen’s Stand, Epperston, or Lothian Suite. The grandstand itself offers spectacular views of the Parade Ring and is home to a few bars and cafes.

Annual attendance at the course has grown to over 70,000 per annum. That is nearly double the yearly attendance it once had in 1999 of 38,000. The course’s Ladies’ Day in June usually has the biggest turnout, having a crowd of over 10,000 people.

Watching Musselburgh Horse Racing Over the Years

The Royal Caledonian Hunt, a Scottish racing club, organised the first races in Musselburgh in 1777. For the period between 1789 and 1815, races were primarily held on Leith’s beaches. A few others also took place in the town itself.

In 1816, a course was officially laid out by Musselburgh’s town council, allowing for the course’s first six-day meet on October 7^th. The club members were so impressed by the course that they distributed 50 guineas amongst the town’s poor.

Racing temporarily ceased during both world wars, but dark clouds continued to loom over the course even after it reopened. After off-course betting was legislated in 1961, attendees for racing went into a decline.

Scotland was hit pretty hard by this, with Lanark and Bogside racecourses both going bankrupt. In 1963, there were even talks of closing Musselburgh’s course for good by the Levy Board as part of its programme of reforms.

Although there was a temporary financial reprieve in 1987, for most of the 1980s and the start of the 1990s, it looked like the course would be closing permanently.

Racecourse Resurrection

Thankfully, the East Lothian Council took over management of the racecourse in 1991; They got it to break-even in a single year. From 1995 onwards, a £7.5 million refurbishment plan was set up to enhance the track, and profits were used to develop new amenities.

Musselburgh has made great efforts to regularly improve and upgrade its amenities. Being not-for-profit, it constantly reinvests any earnings back into the course.

Racegoers who have not been to the course for some time are often pleasantly surprised upon returning; The facilities and overall customer experience are continually improving.
