Located in the county of Berkshire, Newbury ranks among the most popular and important horse racing courses in the UK.

A relatively new track, Newbury has only formally been hosting races at its current location for a little over a century. It hosts many notable races each year and regularly brings in a large number of racegoers.

Newbury Races: Course Layouts

For the flat season, Newbury is also known for being the location of the Lockinge Stakes, the second mile-long race of the British Champions Series. Being a Group One race since 1995, its status reflects how valuable it is, with over £350,000 in prize money.

A round course, Newbury has a left-handed, galloping track approximately 15 furlongs in around with a straight nearly 5 furlongs in length. There are a few slight undulations throughout the straight mile, but this does not take away from its galloping nature.

National Hunt Course

The jumps course features either eleven fences or seven hurdles per circuit. Whilst having fairly stiff fences, being such a wide track that has very easy bends makes most consider it to be amongst the fairest in the country.

Newbury’s National Hunt course

Being situated in the parish of Greenham, the locale surrounding the course is nothing short of beautiful. This complements the inside of Newbury’s track well. It’s known for having an excellent, well-maintained field and top-class facilities.

It has been nominated for a variety of awards by the Racecourse Association (RCA) and the Racehorse Owners Association (ROA).

Newbury has two top-class restaurants from which spectators are recommended to watch the race; Namely the Hennessy Restaurant and the Racegoers Restaurant.

The Hennessy Restaurant allows horse racing fans to experience fine dining while enjoying the panoramic view of the finishing line. The Racegoers Restaurant also has great views of the final furlong location but provides an informal dining experience.

For patrons who desire to stay overnight, The Lodge is Newbury’s 36-room hotel located close to the heart of the estate. With individually designed rooms and boasting excellent service, The Lodge echoes the charm and heritage of Newbury’s racing estate.

Newbury Races Throughout History

The earliest known records of racing taking place in Newbury date to 1805. In that year, the Earl of Craven introduced an annual two-day meeting on his land at Enborne Heath. Titled “Newbury Races”, this meet continued annually until 1811. It transferred to Woodhay Heath after that.

While races were being held somewhat infrequently, Newbury Racecourse itself wouldn’t come to be for almost another century. Kingsclere trainer John Porter then proposed to build a new racecourse.

Although Porter’s plans were rejected numerous times by the Jockey Club, he continued to push for the new course. Luckily, he had a chance meeting with King Edward VII, and they discussed his plans for a new course.

Porter submitted another application after gaining the King’s support and he was finally able to gain the Club’s approval. It pays to have friends in high places!

In April 1904, the Newbury Racecourse Company was formed, and some land was purchased to begin construction in Greenham. The new Newbury Racecourse was finally built, with the first race meeting held in September 1905.

The inaugural two-day meeting drew large crowds of people. In excess of 15,000 were in attendance to witness Copper King win the first race.

Although the course started with flat racing, National Hunt meetings followed soon after, first taking in place in 1906. During that year there were nine days of racing planned for Newbury; Six on the flat and three over jumps.

Racing paused temporarily during both world wars, with the second World War leaving the course very close to ruin. Thankfully, the new Clerk of the Course, Geoffrey Freer, returned Newbury to working status and racing resumed in 1949.

Newbury boasts over 30 fixtures each year and is best known for hosting the Hennessy Gold Cup. This is a National Hunt meeting normally taking place at the end of November.

The three-mile, two-and-a-half-furlong handicap debuted in 1960 and regularly attracts many highly skilled chasers. Many winners of the Hennessy Gold Cup have gone on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup later in the season.
