Redcar Upcoming Live Streamed Races

Taking up 72 acres of land right in the heart of Tees Valley, Redcar Racecourse offers 18 thrilling days of live flat racing action between March and November each year.

Redcar Racing – Course Information

Racing in Redcar had modest beginnings which can be traced back to the 18th century. Back then, racing was a simpler affair, being hosted on the beach. The handful of races that were held needed temporary, wooden grandstands to be built.

At one point, horse racing was even abandoned entirely between the start of World War I and the end of World War II. During these periods it was used as an airfield and an army camp instead.

Since then, Redcar has grown substantially and can accommodate all types of racegoers, even promoting itself as a venue for hen and stag parties.

Being a full-time conference and events centre, Redcar Racecourse is also available as a venue for conferences, birthday parties, dinners, and wedding receptions.

Interestingly, this course is also one of the few which has seen a royal winner. Princess Anne rode Gulfland to a five-length victory in the Mommessin Stakes in 1986.

Horse racing in Redcar started in the early part of the 18th century; Races were held infrequently on the town’s sandy beaches and having very meagre prizes.

This continued for over 60 years until the introduction of the Jockey Club; It outlawed racing in the sand and demanded a more respectable racing arrangement be made. The final race on the beaches was held in 1870.

It was only two years, however, before Mr. John Hikeley and a group of Redcar sportsmen were able to make those arrangements. They secured a lease and building the foundation of the racecourse we know today to the Club’s specifications.

Thus, the first meeting on the new course was held on August 9th, 1872.

Viewing at Redcar

Although the racecourse initially began without a grandstand, there are now a variety of options to watch the race from. The highlight is the Paddock Suite, which provides a superb view of the Parade Ring and the Winning Post from the 360-degree viewing balcony.

In the years that followed, the racecourse continued to expand. In 1875, the ‘Redcar and Coatham Grandstand’ was built, with a second stand and stables coming after in 1877.

Racing continued at this new course without incident until the beginning of the first world war. Between 1914 and 1945, Redcar Racecourse was used as both an airfield with flight training by the Royal Naval Air Service and an army camp. During these years, the camp was neglected and fell into a state of disrepair.

Thankfully, immediately after the second world war ended, Major Leslie Petch was appointed Clerk of the Course and set about revitalizing the course.

Becoming the first racecourse to introduce furlong posts, and having closed-circuit television and a timing clock, Redcar’s popularity grew substantially.

Eventually, overcrowding required that a new grandstand be built in 1964, and it is still being used and improved to this day. As a result, the watching racing at Redcar is now vastly improved trackside.

It seems that visitors to Redcar really enjoy it. This is evidenced by it being voted the best racecourse in Scotland and the North (of England) in 2018 by the Racegoers Club.

Redcar Races Course Layout

Approximately a mile and three-quarters around, Redcar Racecourse is a narrow and left-handed oval with a five-furlong straight. With no pronounced bumps at all, the course is completely flat.

Besides two sharp bends, this course provides a very fair test for all gallopers, although it can sometimes be difficult to make up ground from off the pace when conditions are riding fast.

At present, the course’s most lucrative race of the season is the Two-Year-Old Trophy; A flat horse race only open to horses of two years. Being a six-furlong contest with usually more than 20 runners, only the most skilled will make it past the finish line first.

Redcar is also well-known for hosting the Zetland Gold Cup. The Gold Cup is a prestigious handicap which runs over a mile and a half long and is considered to be one of the most valuable races in Europe.

Taking place each year on the second bank holiday Monday in May, this race is named after the Zetland family. The Zetlands have been long-established supporters of the course and were essential in breathing new life into the seaside track.
