The racecourse plays host to around fourteen National Hunt steeplechase meetings throughout the year, from March to October, and is generally considered to rank in the finest small racecourses the country has to offer.
The course is located southwest of the town along the A439 and is within walking distance of the Stratford train station.
Racegoers can enjoy the friendly atmosphere and casual dress code of the centre course viewpoint. This option is inexpensive and appeals to the majority of the local crowd, offering excellent all-around views and the chance to see horses in the Parade Ring.
Alternatively, viewers can opt for the Tattersalls or Club Enclosure tickets, gaining access to the first-floor Garrick Bar and Gallery Restaurant in order to view the racing from above.
The course attracts some of the finest talent from around the British midlands and offers considerable prize money for its size, opening it up to more experienced jockeys and trainers.
Stratford Races: Course Layout
Stratford is a left-handed course, a short one mile and two furlongs in length, but regularly holds races of over three miles. It has a short run-in of 200 yards and is notorious for its unorthodox triangular shape, setting horses up for tricky, sharp corners.
The shape accounts for the unusually high number of fallers, as does the size of the fences and the fact that the majority of the races are well-run. The hurdle track is host to a large amount of well-run races and the short home straight tends to convince jockeys to strike for home earlier than usual.
The course turns gradually for most of the hurdles and sweeps broadly into the home straight, making it easy for riders to get left behind. Since 2008, the water jump has been a staple of the track, a spectacle adored by punters and casual fans alike.
With eight fences and five hurdles and two almost perpendicular corners, the short track is unsuitable for larger galloping horses and favours the most nimble of riders and prominent of horses.
Jockeys’ Thoughts on the Stratford Course
Indeed, rider Aidan Coleman notes how Stratford is by all accounts ‘a speed-orientated track’ where jockeys get riding far out from the finish line. Coleman has commented that the course is perhaps best suited to agile ex-flat horses who are quick over their obstacles.
This is a sentiment echoed by jockey Mick Fitzgerald, who considers quick and accurate jumpers a must at Stratford. The pacing of the fences typically catches horses out, despite their individual ease. Fitzgerald also points to ex-flat horses as strong tips for victory on race days.
Though not quite dating back to Shakespearean times, steeplechasing has been present in the area since 1755 and National Hunt racing has taken place on the current site by the meanders of the Avon ever since.
The Stratford Executive were the first in the country to form a Racecourse Entertainments Committee. They organise year-round entertainment and double up as host of the annual Motorhome and Caravan show in June, the Blue Rodeo and the CAMRA Beer Festival in late summer.
The track is usually profitable and as such offers big prize money across its feature events.
Stratford Races Live Streaming Calendar Highlights
The tradition has always been to run a largely summertime calendar with current racing highlights and popular event days taking place in June and July.
Stratford is perhaps best known for the Pertemps Network Stratford Foxhunters Champion Hunters’ Chase, taking place over a two-day festival in late May or early June every year.
The race is considered the third most prominent in the Hunter Chase Crown behind Cheltenham and Aintree foxhunters. It is run towards the end of the Hunter Chase season, having been first held in 1958.
It’s a real stamina test of three and a half miles and trainers will typically run mature horses as organisers only accept horses of five years or older.
Previous winners include Young Hurricane and Chosen Dream and the grand prize typically sits around £15,000. The Stratford Summer Cup is another feature event, ran in July over two miles and one furlong, attracting the cream of the local crop.
