Located South-East of York and North-West of Humber estuary, Beverley sits in the historic Beverley Westwood 10 miles from Kingston-upon-Hull. It overlooks the market town of Beverley which is situated just one mile away to the Southeast of the course.

Beverley Racecourse Layout

While mainly flat, the Beverley course has a stiff uphill finish and sharp turns.

It features a modern grandstand and boasts an excellent location to spend an afternoon or evening watching flat thoroughbred horse races in the countryside.

Beverley’s flat course

Whether you’re an equestrian looking for an adventure-packed day of enjoyment or a venue to spend some quality time with the family, Beverley Racecourse provides a combination of glamour and thrills throughout its flat racing season.

Beverley has History

The racecourse first opened for racing in the late 1600s. Since then, countless racing enthusiasts have witnessed iconic flat races taking place at the spectacular Westwood horse track.

The year 1767 was an important one for the course, seeing the first annual meeting was organised. It took place a little after the construction of the first-ever grandstand was completed at Beverley on 22nd May.

Before this, races were rarely arranged at the course. Annual meetings continued to take place from 1767 before stopping again for a short time between the years 1798 and 1805.

A second grandstand was opened at the Tattersalls Enclosure in 1968 with an expenditure of 90,000 Pounds. Three-day annual meetings were regularly scheduled in the late 19th century.

With over three hundred flat racing years since the 17th century, the course now provides contemporary facilities like its fellow courses in the region. Beverley racecourse regularly hosts around 19 race days per annum. These include two of its popular listed races, the Hilary Needler Trophy and the Beverley Bullet Sprint.

The course is within walking distance to the town centre where you can find historical architecture along with a number of local restaurants and cafés. If you fancy it, the town can be a great way to spend your evening after the races.

Watching at Beverley

As mentioned, the first grandstand at the course was established in 1767. However, in the last five decades, the management at Beverley has revolutionised the course.

This has been done primarily to ensure that racegoers, owners, and jockeys experience top quality racing and exceptional amenities during their time at the course.

Since they are a non-profit organisation, most of the earnings from Beverley races are reinvested. That has helped modernise the facilities for events that take place at the course every year.

At the moment, giant TV screens throughout the course and private rooms provide extensive coverage of all racing. Racegoers do not miss anything.

An extensive renovation project was planned in August 2018 for Beverley. This is for the replacement of the centuries-old grandstand with an expected completion time of April 2021.

Vantage Points

Three enclosures are currently available for racegoers at Beverley Races. The most luxurious of these is the Premier Enclosure. It boasts fine dining, relaxing atmosphere, and the perfect viewing point to observe horses galloping towards the finish line.

The Premier Enclosure also provides you with exclusive access to all amenities and terraces overlooking the track. Since it is considered a smart enclosure, guests are required to dress to impress.

Sportswear and casual attire, therefore, are not permitted. Racegoers are also forbidden from bringing picnics and alcoholic drinks into this enclosure.

Second on the list is the Grandstand and Paddock Enclosure, which offers a lively atmosphere and a chance to socialise with fellow equestrians.

Since it is the largest and the busiest of the three enclosures, a number of bars and restaurants with fantastic views are located in the grandstand enclosure. Areas such as the Paddock Bar and the Rapid Lad Bar serve plenty of guests on race days.

The dress code is a little more relaxed than the Premier enclosure.

Sitting in the centre of the course, the Course Enclosure puts you right in the middle of the racing action. Guests are welcome to dress comfortably and even bring a rug to watch the races with their families while enjoying drinks and getting a bite to eat at the wonderful Hurn Bar.

Two of the most prestigious races at Beverley Racecourse are the Listed Hilary Needler Trophy and Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes.

The Hilary Needler Trophy race for two-year-olds was first run in 1965 and granted the listed status in 2001. It is annually scheduled in late May or the start of June.

The Beverley Bullet for three-year-old horses and up first took place in 2004. It is regularly scheduled in May every year. Both races are run at a distance of five furlongs.
