York Upcoming Live Streamed Races

Rich in history, racing in York itself has been in use since Roman times more than 2,000 years ago. The first recorded race at York racecourse goes back to 1709 at its current location at Knavesmire.

York Races Live – About the Course

York is an award-winning racecourse and renowned as one of the UK’s top flat courses. It has won the Flat Racecourse of the Year award on numerous occasions amongst other top prizes confirming its status.

There is archeological evidence in existence from the York Archaeological Trust that points to horses racing at Knavesmire even as far back as neolithic times.

The grandstands at York really do give racegoers a panoramic view of the course. These include the Ebor, Knavesmire and Melrose Stands.

As for the course itself, as the name might suggest, Knaves”mire” is in fact historically a rather swamp-like experience for runners. However, in modern times the course has thrived.

It has even acted as a replacement for Royal Ascot when that racecourse was under redevelopment (in 2005) – attracting almost a quarter of a million racegoers over a five day period.

Since 2005, the York course has been round after the track was extended. This was done in order to host the Ascot Gold Cup (which was temporarily moved that year).

2 mile races were then able to be run on the round course. Left-handed and straight flat races are run at the York course. When there are 7 furlong races, these start on a chute.

The all-time attendance record for a single day’s racing at York was way back in 1851 when an estimated 150,000 attended to see Voltigeur take on The Flying Dutchman in a race billed as ‘The Great Match‘.

York Video Calendar Highlights

Today, the live racing experience at York gives us a calendar of races that includes the Middleton Stakes and the Yorkshire Cup.

Of the many big races live streamed from York, the first one worth mentioning is the Duke of York Stakes. And you’ll usually get at least 10,000 men watching this Group 2 race for three year olds & over ran over a distance of six furlongs as part of the Spring Festival.

The Spring Festival offers yet more scintillating races such as the aforementioned Middleton Stakes (open to fillies and mares of age four or older) which is run over 2,063 metres or 1m 2f 56y. The race has seen jockeys such as Frankie Dettori, Ryan Moore, Walter Swinburne, Andrea Atzeni and Kieren Fallon all ride at least two winners each.

Ebor Festival including Group 1 Graded Races

The Ebor festival takes place over four days in August and features a feast of middle-distance group 1 races. These include the International Stakes and Yorkshire Oaks as well as the main event, the Ebor Handicap.

One of the biggest races of all is the Juddmonte International which is a well-established part of the Ebor Festival. It’s the opening race of day one and also York’s richest.

Also known as the International Stakes, the Juddemonte (sponsor’s name) is a relatively recent addition to the racing calendar, having been inaugurated in 1972. The race is open to horses aged three and over and is run on a left-anded track over 1 mile, 2 furlongs and 56 yards – or 2.063 km in metric.

The Ebor Festival also gives us further Group 1 races including the Yorkshire Oaks, held over 1 mile 4 furlongs and open to three years and older fillies and mares. The races has been run since 1849 and in more recent times was Kieren Fallon’s lucky charm.

He won it four times in seven years between 1998 (on Catchascatchcan) and then in 2002,2003 and 2004 on Islington (twice) and Quiff which were both trained by Sir Michael Stoute.

Nunthorpe & Ebor Handicap at York

The Nunthorpe Stakes is another of the big Group 1 races that takes place at the Ebor Festival. It’s run over a straight track over five furlongs (just over one kilometre) and horses two years and older can enter.

Held on day three of the Festival, this race gives the juveniles the opportunity to race against the older horses. With an invitation to enter the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint for the race’s winner, it just adds to the prestige of the Nunthorpe Stakes.

The Ebor Handicap, first referred to back in 1843 as the Great Ebor Handicap, also has a rich history. It has become the first British handicap race to offer prize money of £1 million.

The flagship race is run over a distance of 1m 5f 188 yards (or 2,787 metres in metric) and is open to four year olds and older. Legendary jockey Lester Piggott won the Ebor Handicap five times between 1958 and 1983.

The race had to be run at Newbury (where it was called the Newburgh Handicap) in 2008 after the York track became waterlogged.

Ever wondered why it’s called the Ebor Handicap? It’s a shortened version of what the Romans called York (Eboracum) back when they occupied it from the first century AD. Now that’s some history right there.
