Brighton Upcoming Live Streamed Races
Brighton Racecourse is located on the Freshfield Road in the vibrant city. Brighton itself is famous for its panoramic views of the English coastline and the Sussex Countryside.
The racecourse organises 21 race day meetings annually and the season begins in late April before finally ending till the mid of October. Apart from racing, Brighton Racecourse is open as a venue for a wide variety of events, such as music festivals and summer parties, for the remaining part of the year.
The first horse race was organised at Brighton racecourse’s current location by the Duke of Cumberland in 1783. Originally, only the members of the armed forces who were staying in the town participated in the races and the principal meeting was held in late July or August to coincide with the Whitehawk fair.
The course was once home to top-class racing and was attended by the elite of the time, including members of the Royal family. The Prince of Wales (later to become King George IV) inadvertently invented hurdle racing at the location during one of his rides with fellow aristocrats.
When the Prince and other Royal members stopped attending, the course drifted out of fashion. The railway lines reached Brighton in 1850. This allowed a swift way for Londoners to travel, and so the racecourse started to thrive again.
Close Call
Brighton Racecourse’s history hasn’t been without drama, either. It once faced a chaotic moment when the local farmer who leased the racecourse vowed to plough up the course.
He was apparently upset at not having received his annual gift (a bottle of wine) from the course. With his plough moved into position to carry out the threat, he was chased off by a mob. Fortunately, they were just in time to allow for the races to proceed.
Sitting on the Whitehawk hill near the edge of South Downs, the racecourse is at most 400 feet above sea-level and only a mile away from the English coast. This is how visitors get well-positioned views of the sea, even from the grandstand.
Brighton Races Live Stream: Course Layout
The Brighton course is one mile and four furlongs long; The first half features a gradual climb before it starts to level off. The final furlong is also a bit uphill, making the track suitable for athletic horse types instead of long-striding ones.
The shape of the course resembles a horseshoe; It’s U-shape makes it one of the English racecourses to not form a complete circuit.
The circuit is left-handed and with no significant draw bias. That said, on very soft ground there can be a high draw bias if horses come near side.
Watching Brighton Races
Although racing started in 1783, the first grandstand at Brighton was constructed in 1788. Shortly after in August 1796, the grandstand was burnt down. The suspects were none other than the poor local family that was permitted to live inside it.
Another grandstand replaced the burnt structure before the inauguration of the Brighton Cup. Following World War II, Brighton racecourse witnessed crowds of over 20,000 enthusiasts. To accommodate the racegoers, grandstands were erected on both sides of the track.
A new stand was constructed in 1965 with a cost of 400,000 Pounds.
The current grandstand offers two enclosures and several food outlets and entertainment facilities to make use of during a busy race meeting. The racecourse can almost accommodate 10,000 vehicles and charges nothing for parking, a rare sight in Brighton.
The Grandstand and Paddock Enclosure features the grandstand seating overlooking the race track, Tote betting facilities, picnic area, and the Parade Ring along with a number of restaurants and bars. The Long Bar and the seafood bar are popular among other smaller outlets that serve classic English fast food.
The Premier Enclosure provides exclusive access to several facilities in addition to the amenities in the Grandstand Enclosure; These include the Silks Restaurant and Premier Bar.
The Silks offers a delicious three-course meal and tables can be kept for the entire afternoon. Guests with the premier badge are also welcome to take a suitable place along the winning line and watch as horses flash past them.
