Curragh Course Overview
Curragh had its first ever race in 1727, according to records. It was 139 years later that it hosted the first Derby, which has since grown to what it is today.
The course is named after horse racing itself. The word originates from the Galeic ‘Cuirreach’ which translates to “place of running horses” – very fitting.
The Course
The Home of the Irish Classics is a horseshoe shaped track which has several different starting points. The longer races start from further out and therefore have a less sharp bend.
Each course obviously has different characteristics, but overall, they are all seen as fair tracks and jockeys/owners very rarely use the track as an excuse for a defeat.
The Derby course has a period of slightly rising ground coming on to the bend before a downhill section heading into the home straight. At this point the horses are again met by some very gradual rising ground in the final few furlongs.
This pattern of track is the same for the 7f course, the 1m6f course and the Plate track, although of all of these the Derby track is most affected by the large bend of the course.
Of all the courses, which are all right-handed, the Derby track and the inner track have the most draw biases. A lot of the racing on the Derby track is on the bend itself. Thus, a low draw is best because they are covering the least ground.
Conversely, on the inner course, the higher draws are much preferred due to the slight camber from the stand side rail to the far rail.
Viewing at Curragh Racecourse
Curragh Racecourse has an extraordinary grandstand after its eighty one million euro renovation in 2019.
The upside down pyramid shaped roof to the building makes it both incredibly eye-catching but also convenient. That’s because it provides both shade from the rain at the winter meetings, and shade for the summer months.
The grandstand has exceptional views over the course, as well as acres and acres of well-kept grass that the venue has.
From all different angles, different parts of Curragh are viewable, from the all-weather tracks to the stables and short tracks.
If you ever get the opportunity to go to Curragh Racecourse, may it be for a big race or just a simple midweek seven race card, then it is well worth pursuing.
The track attracts some unbelievable names as well as some top quality newcomers. You could be watching the next Sea The Stars debuting if you’re lucky.
The atmosphere at all meetings is full of excitement and energy, but not to the level of those Irish Classics, the chance to be there in the flesh is a once in a lifetime one!
Curragh Racing Live Stream Calendar Highlights
Despite hosting 19 meetings from the beginning of March to late October and all of the 10 of the 12 Irish Group 1 races, the most highly attended and watched race in the entire year is the Irish Derby.
The one mile and four furlong sprint traditionally takes place towards the end of June and is eligible for entrants of horses that are three years olds and not geldings.
However, the race is dominated by colts, with fillies choosing to go for the Irish Oaks instead despite the three pound allowance they get for being a filly in the Derby field.
The most famous horse to have won the Irish Derby is unquestionably Galileo in 2001. The A P O’Brien trained horse had an unbelievably successful two years, winning the Derby Trial, Epsom Derby, Irish Derby and the King George within just 730 days.
