Downpatrick Upcoming Live Streamed Races
Located in the town with the same name, the Downpatrick race course runs only National Hunt races. Flat racing has long been discontinued there. Its feature race of the year has to be the Ulster National Handicap Chase, ran over 3m 4 100y.
This fact gives the racecourse the unofficial name of “The Home of National Hunt Racing in Ireland”. Downpatrick is the venue with the longest-running, uninterrupted horse racing in Ireland. The course has now started to be included in the winter campaigns of Grand National and Cheltenham winners.
Downpatrick boasts a devout local following with crowds attending heavily in all weather conditions. A number of top class horses have raced at Downpatrick; This includes Grand National winners, such as Caughoo in 1947 and Rhyme and Reason in the 1988 Grand National.
Longest Running
Racing at Downpatrick dates back as far as 1685. It became the first Irish venue to hold a meeting under the 1665 Act of Parliament from King Charles II’ time that defined the rules of horse racing.
It is therefore the oldest venue for official rules horse racing in Ireland. The location for this original racecourse was very close to where it is now. However this three-mile racecourse was in the shape of a horse shoe.
It wasn’t too long before that this old one was abandoned, and the new course implemented. Running ever since, it means Downpatrick has hosted races almost entirely uninterrupted for over three hundred years since.
In 1690, The Byerley Turk raced at Downpatrick before carrying Colonel Robert Byerley to the Battle of the Boyne. It’s said that the horse helped Byerley narrowly avoiding capture due to the fantastic speed of his war horse.
