Like many racecourses in the UK, Exeter has contributed to the local history of the course since the 17th century, created by Charles II. There are multiple claims placing Exeter Racecourse as the oldest racecourse in the country.

Meetings run from October to May with a total of 15 meetings being held year-round. A number of key races are held here, with the historical Gold Cup race being a highlight of the race calendar. The current best-known race to take place here is the Haldon Gold Cup, held every November.

The course was a popular site well up and through the 19th century with entrants from across the United Kingdom travelling to take part. It survived the decline in popularity of National Hunt racing in the 1850s, continuing to run races almost uninterrupted up until the present day.

During this time period the racecourse was a prominent location for Devonshire duelling. The last recorded duel in Devon occurred at the course in the year 1833 between Dr Peter Hennis and Sir John Jeffcott, a local judge.

Jeffcott challenged Hennis to a duel over the allegations of spreading gossip, wounding Hennis who would later die from his injuries. Jeffcot lived out the rest of his days in Sierra Leone to escape prosecution.

In more recent years, the course is notorious as the location in which racehorse Best Mate died of a heart attack whilst competing in the William Hill Haldon Gold Cup. One of the nations most beloved racehorses, it made front page news when he collapsed mid-race.

A statue stands there to this day to commemorate a cherished racehorse. Best Mate was an Irish Bred and English trained racehorse who won the Cheltenham Gold Cup three times in three consecutive years, matching the record of racehorse Arkle.

In this same competition, he was the first horse to win the Gold Cup more than once since 1970 and 1971, where L’Escargot managed this feat. In his spectacular career, he managed to never fall at a fence or a hurdle.

Out of a total of 22 starts, he won 14, came second in seven, and in the 22nd race he had to pull up, shortly before his death.

Epsom Races Live Stream: Course Layout

The course is located at the top of Haldon Hills, almost 260m above sea level, making it the highest racecourse in the entire United Kingdom. The total course length consists of three miles, made up of an oval course two miles in length, and the addition of a flat one-mile course.

The course Hunt course comprises of two open ditches and one water hump, to contribute to a total of eleven fences. The course runs right-handed, a notable difference from many of the nation’s courses.

The testing straight is 4 furlongs, and the run in from the last fence comes to just under 250 yards.

It is considered one of the toughest National Hunt courses in the country due to the uphill finish with the home straight coming in at half a mile. This proves to be a real test of stamina for many horses. It has a galloping nature to the course, making it extremely popular to train novice chasers.

The entirety of the course is hilly in nature, and conditions can get testing towards the winter. However, the opposite exists in drier months as the course lacks an artificial watering system.
