The course is situated on the outskirts of the town of Fakenham, around 25 miles north of Norwich and 20 miles east of King’s Lynn.

It plays home to a feature of key meetings in the racing calendar; Thes include the Sky Sports Racing Day and the Greene King Race day. It provides a friendly and casual atmosphere for guests and families of all ages. There are 12 meetings a year held between October and June.

Fakenham History

Racing has been taking place at Fakenham since the West Norfolk Hunt was relocated from King’s Lynn to Fakenham. The race had previously been running at East Winch in King’s Lynn; However, it was relocated to Fakenham in 1905 to adapt for lighter ground that was more suitable at Fakenham.

Given contemporary travel issues, a race with 37 runners proved ultimately successful for the course. The West Norfolk Hunt would be the only race to run every year until 1926, where hurdle races began to supplement the popularity of steeplechase.

Racing in the area goes back as far as 1884, however the first meeting at the current location indeed took place on Easter Monday 1905. Previously the town of King’s Llyn played host to racing fixtures in West Norfolk.

They held races from September 1850 through the latter half of the 19th century. This original course was a mile in length with 6 hurdles, featuring the biggest annual race at the time, the Innkeepers’ Plate.

Norfolk horse racing has always attracted royal prestige. Since King Edward VII became the first patron of the racecourse, a royal has always held this prestigious title.

Queen Elizabeth II would hold the role for almost fifty years before Prince Charles took over in 2000. This birthed the fitting idea that the Prince of Wales Stand would be named after His Royal Highness. It was constructed in 2002 with a budget of over £1 million.

Annual fixtures increased in the 20th century, from two to five initially in 1965. Today, Fakenham has developed to hosting 12 meetings a year.

Up until 1953 most of the race took place on an adjacent field with a limited view for spectators. The Grandstand was built in this year; It added enlargements to the paddock, accommodating a higher intake of racers and spectators.

Interestingly during the year 1999, a greyhound racing track was opened on the course, holding independent dog races.

In May of 2010 the course is also notable for hosting Bob Champion, the man who rode Aldaniti in the 1981 Grand National victory at Aintree. He visited the racecourse as part of his journey to attend all British racecourses in 60 days.

Actor John Hurt, who had originally portrayed Champion in the movie Champions joined him at the course. Hurt had recently moved to Norfolk.
