The Liverpool-based track is viewed by hundreds of millions annually as the country focuses its attention to racing. However, there’s a lot more racing to be seen from Aintree throughout the year, too.

The Aintree venue was originally opened as a flat racecourse in 1829 and attracted fair crowds; However, after seven years the owners decided to switch to steeplechasing and see the effects, it hasn’t looked back since.

The now-National Hunt track has since propelled the careers of many well-renowned horses. The likes of Tiger Roll and Red Rum have become household names due to how well they coped over the demanding 4-mile trip.

With a prize fund of £1million, it comes as no surprise that over 600 million people from over 140 countries tune in to watch the National. Recently, due to the coronavirus outbreak, the 2020 Grand National was changed to a virtual race.

In it, Potter’s Corner’s late surge prevented hat-trick seeking Tiger Roll from equalling the record for most Grand National wins by one horse. Not really the same a live horse racing, though, is it?

Aintree Races Live Stream: Course Layout

The course could be described as a triangle due to how the Mildmay and the Grand National course tracks connect.

This larger interconnecting course therefore allows for shorter races, in the Mildway section, and then the long-distance races on the Grand National track.

The triangular Aintree National Hunt course

The Grand National course is regarded as the most difficult trip in the country; That’s due to the size of the 16 steeplechase fences. Infamous obstacles such as Becher’s Brook, the Chair and the Canal Turn claiming fallers on a yearly basis.

The 40-horse field travels round the course twice, taking on 16 obstacles on the first lap and 14 on the second. That’s before battling their way to the finishing line in front of the crowded grandstand upon the lengthy home straight.

The Mildmay course is a notably labouring track, made up of two sharp bends connected two flat extended straights.

Horses often benefit from the trip if they are good travellers and don’t need too much encouragement to find their rhythm. Otherwise, the home straight seems endless if the jockey has been off the bit since before the turn for home.

Lord Mildmay originally designed the track, which has since taken his name. The former amateur jockey, who is credited with having jumps racing accepted in greater society by encouraging the Queen Mother to buy a horse, used the track to allow novices to become familiar with racing at Aintree.

Fence Trademark

The track used smaller, spruce-covered fences to replicate the large fences of the Grand National. This ensured that the home straight felt as extensive as the larger track.

However, the track was never overly popular with owners and in 1990 it was redesigned into the track that it is today. That is, using traditional birch fences.

Spruce-covered fences are a trademark of the Aintree Racecourse. The Grand National course is the only National Hunt track in the UK that covers its fences in spruce. It makes them more daunting for the horses and gives them higher obstacles to tackle.

Racing fans travel from far and wide to visit Aintree. The course is situated on the outskirts of Liverpool and has a capacity of 75,000. It always sells out for all three days of the Grand National meeting; This makes it the second-biggest racecourse in the UK behind Epsom Downs (120,000).

But the Grand National is not the only significant meeting at the Aintree racecourse. The track hosts a host of important Grade 1 and Grade 2 races. The Betway Bowl is a 3m1f race that takes place on the Friday before the National; It is specifically for 5-year-olds and over.

The last two winners of the Betway Bowl were Kemboy, by nine lengths, (2019) and Might Bite, by seven lengths (2018). Both breezed clear of the pack to win impressively.

Calendar Highlights to Watch from Aintree Races

The late 2015 Grand National winner Many Clouds has a Grade 2 race named after him at Aintree, the Many Clouds Chase. The race is always scheduled for a December meeting and has produced some other long-distance specialists; These include Native River and Definitly Red.

Here’s the full video of Tiger Roll winning his first Grand National in 2018 by just a head. Gordon Elliott’s star replicated the victory the following year in impressive style to set up his hat-trick!

Aintree is an exceptional racecourse and is well-celebrated by racing fans who love to watch live racing there.

The left-handed track and sharp elbow make it an exciting course for punters and makes a brilliant home for, arguably, the best jumps race of the season.
