Leicester Upcoming Live Streamed Races

Returning horse racing fans travel to the Leicester racecourse consistently. No wonder, because there are 30 meetings at the course every year.

When racing isn’t on then the agenda it is used as a venue for concerts, weddings and other events. Let’s look at the tracks you’ll see on the Leicester live racing stream.

Leicester Racing Course Layout

The jumps track is a right-handed, oval-shaped course that proves a real test of stamina and jumping ability.

The course has a few sharp turns but overall it is a fair course, with many runners opting to take a steady pace around the track. That’s so that they can save their energy for the three furlong uphill home straight.

Gradually, the course has become easier, with the size of the fences slowly being reduced over the years. This was felt to be necessary due to the high number of casualties caused by the obstacles.

Unusually, hurdle races are run on the flat course and this is often seen as a hindrance for competitors. The reason for that is simple but it’s worth knowing.

Once the flat season has finished, the ground is given a heavy watering so that it doesn’t dry out and so it is replenished for the next year. However, this heavy drenching of water mixed with the typical poor weather associated with jumps season makes for a very heavy and boggy track.

Leicester’s Flat course

Flat racing is yet another oval track. The course, which is a mile and three quarters long, has an extended straight for when the races under a mile long begin. The course is downhill for the most part, with a two furlough stretch of rising ground before the home (flat) straight.

The flat course at Leicester

Leicester is a galloping track and is favoured by horses who settle quickly and are happy to travel along comfortably without the encouragement from jockeys. Those who run green or don’t have the greatest of stamina rarely finish in the top three.

Leicester Viewing

You can expect to see high definition quality video when watching the live streaming direct from Leicester racecourse. It’s the next best thing to being there at the course in person.

If you do manage to get to the track, it’s a worthwhile experience, too. The backdrop of fields and trees from the grandstand puts the focus purely on the horses on display.

Not that they would go unnoticed; Leicester usually sees a high quality of runners consistently competing at the track!

Leicester Racing Calendar Highlights to Watch

Probably the most well-respected race at the track is the King Richard III Stakes. The race takes place in late April and is just over seven furlongs long.

The entry requirements for the race are fairly specific in comparison to other notable races; Entrants must be four-years-old or over and have not won a Group 1 or Group 2 race in the last two years leading up to the race.

In 2019, the race was won by James Tate’s Hey Gaman; The colt made all to win in emphatic style under Frankie Dettori. Here is our pick of the best races to live stream from Leicester racecourse:

Another race that Leicester Racecourse is recognised for is being the venue for the Flockton Grey ringer case. A major betting scandal that is seen as the greatest of its kind in racing history.

The Old Switcheroonie

The story is that Flockton Grey was a promising new purchase for owner Ken Richardson and trained by Stephen Wiles in Yorkshire.

They entered the horse into its first race at Leicester on the 29th March 1982. The race was specifically for two-year-old horses only, and Flockton Grey was not fancied at all by bookmakers. That’s because Wiles hadn’t trained a winner for the last two years; Consequently they priced him up at 10/1.

With such a large price on offer, the pair lumped considerable money on the horse at a variety of different bookmakers. But here’s the twist. They then raced a different horse in the race – Good Hand, also trained by Wiles, who was a three-year-old.

Due to the experience and ability difference from Good Hand in comparison to the rest, the horse bolted up by 20 lengths. It was a truly jaw-dropping display, inevitably leading to suspicions amongst the bookmakers and racing fans alike.

A case ensued that led to the cunning plan being uncovered and the pair being hit with fines and suspended prison sentences. Jockey Kevin Darley was found not guilty due to how the Englishman was completely unaware of what had happened.

Leicester is still well-recognised for its two-year-old races to this day and hosts many races of the kind regularly. Trainers from all over the country travel to the course to enter their inexperienced newcomers, which has led to some top level horses debuting at the course.

The venue itself is extremely large and has the facilities to cater for very large crowds for both types of racing.
