Nottingham Races Live Stream: Course Layout

The flat and left-handed course is approximately a mile and a half in circumference and oval in shape. There is an extension to the finishing straight for sprint races of 6 furlongs or less.

The Nottingham flat course

The former national hunt course was also a left-handed oval of the same distance with nine easy fences.

The two tracks run side-by-side with very few differences between them. Five and six furlong races are contested over a straight course with minor undulations, with speedy, handy types being favoured.

About the Nottingham Racecourse

Based in Colwick Park, the course in Nottingham is only two miles east of the city; This make it a convenient and appealing destination for a day trip to the races.

The course provides exceptional service to the owners of horses participating in the races; This is evidenced by being been awarded the Racehorse Owner’s Association’s Gold Standard.

While horse racing in the area first took place in the forests of Nottingham during the late 1600s, the first official meeting at Colwick Park would not take place for nearly two hundred years afterward.

The course once hosted national hunt racing in the past, but Nottingham is now used exclusively for flat racing. Instead of abandoning the national hunt track, the racecourse now switches between it and the flat track. By doing this, it is ensured that the best racing ground will always be used.

While not the biggest or best furnished, Nottingham Racecourse is still one of the most popular racecourses in the country; It is particularly loved for its Grandstand and Centenary Stand.

Viewing Options at Nottingham

At Nottingham, there are two enclosures from which racegoers can enjoy the races: The Grandstand Enclosure and the Premier Enclosure.

The Grandstand Enclosure is the larger of the two. The Grandstand offers stunning views across the racecourse; It grants access to access to the Parade Ring, Winners Enclosure and the Betting Ring.

It doesn’t end there. With Winning Plaice (fish) and the Champions Bar, this enclosure keeps all spectators well fed as they enjoy the race.

On the other hand, the Premier Enclosure has unrivalled access to top facilities with superior views. The compact Centenary Grandstand provides more than just panoramic views of the racecourse; but also close views of the winning post, parade ring, and winner’s enclosure.

On the second floor, Sherwoods Restaurant provides a hot meal to go along with the sweeping views of the racecourse. The Centenary Bar provides drinks and snacks, plus an elevated bird’s eye view of the racecourse from its trackside balcony.

History of Horse Racing in Nottingham

The Nottingham area always had a penchant for organised horse racing, staging meetings as early as the 1700s. Initially, racing was hosted on the land between the river Trent and the surrounding forest (known as the Forest Recreation Ground). Records suggest that it was first used as a racing venue in 1689.

After the closure of the Forest Recreation Ground in September 1890, a limited company was set up with the goal of buying new land to build a new course. The company’s hard work came to fruition and in 1891 Colwick Park was purchased to be the new horse racing site. Thus, Nottingham Racecourse’s first official race meeting was held on August 19th, 1892.

Despite the popularity of racing in the region, mismanagement and difficult conditions nearly brought about the end of the racecourse. In 1997, National Hunt races were taken off the fixture list entirely; The Nottingham course then became a strictly flat racing track.

Thankfully, the Racehorse Holdings Trust (RHT) decided to step in, securing the future of Nottingham’s course. Today, Nottingham Racecourse is one of the most popular racecourses in the country.
