Perth Racecourse – About the Course
Exclusively hosting national hunt meetings, Perth is a rather unique course, and one of the few racecourses that race right-handed. An attractive track on the banks of the River Tay, Perth has had the honour of receiving the Best Overall Racecourse for Scotland award from the Racegoer’s Club.
Situated on the parklands of Scone Palace (where the Kings of Scotland once held their crowning ceremonies) this racecourse has a rich history that enchants its attendants when they visit the track.
Racing since the reign of James VI of Scotland, Perth regularly attracts a high calibre of owners, jockeys, and trainers and provides and offers some of the most thrilling races in the UK.
Having two enclosures to watch the races, the views of the course are stunning. The Grandstand area gives racegoers access to the paddock, allowing them to see both horses and jockeys up close and even features its own restaurant.
The Centre Course, while only being open for weekend fixtures, provides a quality view from the middle of the track, and lets attendants get right in the middle of the action.
Perth Racecourse Layout
The racecourse at Perth is one of the few right-handed circuits. Being roughly eleven and a half furlongs around, the course has very tight bends which turn many races into a test of stamina. Adding in the long straight (which is fairly far from the finish), and jockeys will need to pace their horses well to secure victory.
There are eight fences per circuit in the steeplechase course with a water jump being positioned right in front of the grandstand. Being a very flat course, however, the jumps themselves do not pose many difficulties to the more highly skilled runners.
History of Horse Racing in Perth
With Scotland being touted as the unofficial home of National Hunt racing, it would come to the surprise of few that racing in the Perthshire area originated as early as the 17th century.
The earliest known record of racing in Perth can be traced back to 1613 when gentlemen raced competitively at the Silver Bell. This took place on land known as South Inch, located on the shores of the River Tay. Though racing took place annually, the contests eventually ceased due to Oliver Cromwell’s crusade against racing.
There was no more evidence of racing for over a century until the Royal Caledonian Hunt Club visited in 1791. Enjoying Perth greatly, they introduced the Caledonian Gold Cup in 1818. They later increased the number of race days at Perth and regularly organised meetings in the area until 1890.
Racing continued in the area for some time after in an informal manner. However, believing that the drunken behaviour of some racegoers was spoiling the sport, the Jockey Club ruled that meetings be transferred to a more favourable location.
In 1906, work began on erecting a racecourse in the Earl of Mansfield’s Scone Palace Park. Its first race meeting took place between the 23rd and 24th of September in 1908, and racing has continued at this location ever since.
Perth Racing Video Live Stream Calendar Highlights
Regularly bringing in a decent-sized crowd, the course is best known for hosting the Perth Festival in April. The three-day festival kickstarts the course’s racing season and presents several national hunt showdowns over Perth’s seven fences.
The Gold Castle Novice Hurdle headlines the festival’s first day and regularly has a prize purse size of at least £16,000 for the winner. On the other hand, closing out the season is the Highland National. At three-miles and six-furlongs, the national is the racecourse’s longest race.
Outside of the festival, Perth’s most notable and valuable race is the Class 2 Perth Gold Cup. Typically offering winnings of at least £25,000, this handicap is a little under three miles long and attracts more visitors to the course than any other single-day fixture.
The two-day Glorious Finale rounds out Perth’s season in late September. Being the oldest fixture in the region, the meeting dates back to Perth’s informal beginnings in racing during the 17th century and is a chance for attendants to relive history.
Being busiest throughout the summer, Perth regularly hosts 15 meetings each year. The most notable races include:
