Although the Queen Elizabeth Stakes was established in 1955, at the time it was previously known as the Knights’ Royal Stakes before being renamed in honour of the reigning monarch.
The race is open to horses the age of 3 and over and was, for many years, run at Ascot annually in September before switching to October in 2011.
The first three winners of the event were all trained in France, including the inaugural Queen Elizabeth II Stakes champion, Hafiz.

Race Trivia
- The Queen Elizabeth II stakes was run at Newmarket in 2005 won by the thoroughbred, Starcraft.
- In 1974, the course was so waterlogged that the race was abandoned.
British Champions Day
The QEII Stakes forms part of the fantastic British Champions Day. The meeting is usually held in October at Ascot and is for thoroughbred horses.
The day sees the climax of the British Champions Series and is the country’s biggest prize money day of the racing calendar. The finals of no less than 5 divisions of the British Champions Series are held on this single day.
British Champions Day is sponsored by QIPCO. It’s yet another prestigious name to be sponsored by a Qatari investment group. It also happens to be the biggest sponsorship deal that UK horse racing has ever had.
This race is one of seven mile-long ones. Other races in the Series include:
- Sprint races including the July Cup and Queen Anne Stakes
- Long Distance races including the Ascot Gold Cup and British Champions Long Distance Cup
- Fillies & Mares races including British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes and Coronation Stakes
- Middle Distance races including the Epsom Derby and Juddemonte International Stakes ran at York
