Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse has played host to National Hunt racing since its first steeplechase in February 1859.
Bangor’s pear-shaped course is well-respected as the testing grounds for some of the finest horses around. Previous jumpers Iris’ Gift, Denman and Amberleigh House went on to win the Stayer’s Hurdle, Cheltenham Gold Cup, and Grand National, respectively.
Bangor Races Live Stream: Course Layout
A left-handed track, Bangor features three relatively sharp turns and is a good match for smaller, nippier geldings. It is about 1m 3f in circumference and is mostly flat, with a few small undulations.
The track has a short run-in of one furlong and nine fences with no water. That’s because the only water jump was removed in 2006 in order to take advantage of the full width of the track.
Riders such as Aidan Coleman have commented on the tight nature of the track, suited to ‘strong travelling types’ who can follow the quickest line around.
Others such as Mick Fitzgerald agree on the importance of a well-travelling horse and regard it as ‘one of the quickest tracks around’. The nine fences, according to Fitzgerald, represent a modest challenge and are suited to ‘fast, accurate jumpers’.
Viewing at Bangor
Bangor races is famed for being Britain’s only track without a grandstand. This, along with its setting in pristine Welsh countryside, only seems to add to its unique charm.
The course is currently operated by Chester Race Company, Ltd., and is a sister to nearby Chester, Britain’s oldest operational racecourse.
Most race-goers cheer on from their views via the overlooking grass bank; Although there is also a paddock enclosure for keen fans looking to get closer to the pre-amble and the home straight.
Bangor-on-Dee Live: History
Since the 25th of February, 1859, Bangor has played host to consistent racing, interrupted only in wartime. For the first twenty years or so, the main event was a fourteen-pony steeplechase, held annually.
By 1887, the course was beginning to develop a certain reputation as Gamecock, a Bangor veteran, ran to victory at the Grand National. Two years later, Fred Hassell set an impressive course record by riding five winners in a single meeting; This is a feat that stands unmatched to this day.
In the early years of the 20th century, the Grand Wynnstay developed its reputation as an important local fixture, with horses Forbear and Merriman II riding to victory in 1901 and 1905, respectively.
April 5th, 1929, marked the first occasion disgruntled locals were charged an admission fee to watch the racing, having to pay two shillings a head. Nevertheless, Bangor was sorely missed by locals during the restrictive war years.
Peacetime Return
Bangor-on-Dee fittingly saw a record attendance of 11,000 on the 30th of March, 1946. The course continued to gather momentum in the spring of 1947, introducing the hurdle course and hosting two well-received steeplechase meetings.
The ‘50s and ‘60s saw the course owners display a keener business acumen, establishing the Bangor-on-Dee Steeplechase company in 1953. It attracted the Tote Investors as its first official sponsor for the meeting of April 1968.
The longevity of the course was secured with a long-term lease with Peel Settled Estates in 1971. After concerns of poor drainage and cattle overgrazing the track, Bangor set aside £15,000 for well-needed maintenance.
The course was now one of the finest around. The excitement of the 1973 blue riband handicap chase, won by Lord Shrewsbury’s Monaco Tan, attracted a strong attendance of 7,000 spectators.
The 1970s also saw the installation of the course’s first photo-finish camera and the beginning of BBC television coverage. That meant commentator Sir Peter O’Sullivan calling the action from the banks of the River Dee to UK television sets.
Doubtless blessed with a colourful history, the course has gradually updated and reinvented itself over the years.
Towards the turn of the 21st century, Bangor began to resemble the state that you will see on the Bangor-on-Dee live racing stream. The first brick structure was built on-site in order to replace the tired pre-war wooden ones in 1988.
After disastrous flooding in 2000, the Bangor executive committed to extensive renovation. They invested £850,000 in the construction of new betting shops, hospitality rooms, turnstiles, toilet blocks, bars, and restaurants.

Nowadays, of the more popular events are the local hunts’ amateur point-to-point meetings. These are run on a smaller right-hand course inside the main track. There is also well as the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Foal Show.
