Chelmsford Racing: Course Layout

The course at Chelmsford City is an 8.5-furlong stretch beautifully crafted into a left-handed, oval-shaped all-weather Polytrack surface with a 2 furlong home straight.

Chelmsford City’s flat course

The racecourse is one of the highest prize-money rewarding settings among other English racecourses. As such, it attracts some of the best talent in horse racing from the whole of the UK.

Chelmsford City was the newest addition to the list of British horse racing venues when it opened in April 2008. Shortly after that, though, it went into administration in 2009. Before this, the last racecourse addition was Taunton in 1927.

Built on the remains of the former Great Leighs racecourse, Chelmsford City didn’t hold races until it was reopened for racing on 11th January 2015. Shortly after, the first-ever race took place on 1st February 2015.

Gap in the market

The racecourse was developed and formerly owned by the business tycoon John Holmes and his son, Jonathan. The idea was to exploit the largest gap in organised horse racing in the UK.

It met the need for a racing venue in Essex, a county with a population of more than 1.6 million.

After its inclusion, there is at least one racecourse per one million people on the English mainland. Since its opening, it has become one of the busiest racecourses in the whole of the UK.

Located in the village of Great Leigh, Chelmsford City Racecourse is right in the heart of Essex countryside. It’s 50 miles south from the largest horse training centre in Great Britain (Newmarket) and approximately 50 miles to the North-East from Central London.

The racecourse saw an attendance of 80,000 visitors in its first year of operation, which was deemed successful by spectators. Helped by its proximity to the city centre, Chelmsford City racecourse initially attracted a huge crowd from the Greater London Area and nearby counties.

However, after a number of winning horses that ran at Chelmsford went on to win at popular international racing festivals. These include Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood, racing enthusiasts from around the world came flocking to the course during the season.

Chelmsford Viewing

The view of the flat course from the grandstand is spectacular regardless of your position in the stand. Situated inside the oval-shaped track, the modern 250,000 square foot grandstand alone accommodates at most 10,000 racegoers and houses three dining areas.

The grandstand also features an elevated platform for the betting ring and outside seating arrangements. Thanks to its contemporary design and champagne flute styled floodlighting, the newly constructed grandstand was first nominated for an architectural award in 2016. It has since won three RCA Excellence awards.

The racecourse fields are also available for a variety of non-racing events. As has become the trend, it hosts live music concerts, food festivals, wedding exhibitions, and family fun days.

The Chelmsford City racecourse has only one enclosure, the Grandstand and Paddock Enclosure. Racegoers have access to elevated viewing terraces such as the Parade Ring. Here, racegoers get to see the horses along with their owners and jockeys before the races commence.

One of the main attractions at the grandstand is the Club Restaurant. It provides a 360-degree view of the course along with fine dining. Then there is the Fairwood Restaurant and the Sports Bar which have plenty of tables overlooking the course.
