Down Royal plays host to several key races in the calendar, including the Ladbrokes Champion Chase and the Ulster Derby. And you can watch them all.

One of just two racecourses in Northern Ireland, (the other being Downpatrick) Down Royal hosts the first Grade 1 chase of the year. This also marks the beginning of jumping season in Irish racing. The track surrounds Down Royal Park golf course.

Royal Tradition

Before moving to its current course at Maze, Down Royal has a varied history. With the land going back as far as the reign of King James II, a Royal Charter was issued for the location to set up as a horse breeder.

The Royal Corporation of Horse Breeders purpose as an organisation was to improve the quality of racehorses in Ireland through selective breeding. Their efforts would go on to found the Irish stud industry.

To this day it remains one of the strongest and most successful globally.

In 1750 King George II donated to form the King’s Plate. It’s a race that still goes today in the form of a race known as Her Majesty’s Plate. The prize money is still given by the Royal Privy Purse to this day.

Down Royal plays host to twelve fixtures in the Irish Racing calendar with a focus on flat races. The Ulster Derby and Oaks ran in June heavily feature in these.

The biggest event in the year is the Northern Irish Festival of Racing. It’s an event held over two days with four Graded National Hunt fixtures taking place.

Down Royal Racecourse Layout

Down Royal contains a right-handed, square track coming in at just under two miles in length at 1 Mile and 7 furlongs. It is used for both flat and national hunt racing.

The course features ten fences in a circuit, with four on the home straight and the final mile contains a slight uphill finish.

Down Royal Races National Hunt course

The track is wide meaning riders on the chase course tend to take as wide a route as possible with the better ground lying towards the outside.

For races run at five furlongs, the course features a chute. This runs on a constant right turn until the final furlong, favouring well-balanced horses. Thus, speed is not being the only important attribute.

For flat races, flag starts are an option but the default for the track is a stall start.

Down Royal Races Viewing

There are a number of Race day hospitality packages according to their website, with particular focus given to a number of suites.

The main grandstand offers a great view over the whole of the racecourse. It provides up-close views of the home straight and the winning post. The grandstand features a self-service restaurant “The Winning Post Café” as well as other bars and fast-food counters.

The Moscow Flyer Suite is located on the first floor of the grandstand. It has a balcony offering a perfect view of the parade ring.

For those who prefer the premium option, The Shortcross Gin Suite includes a first-class menu for perusal.

Located on the top floor of the Hospitality Pavilion with a balcony overlooking the parade ring is the Rainbow Communications Suite. It’s better suited for a smaller more intimate feel.

Virtual tours and price guides are available on the Down Royal website. As well as these private suites there are various food outlets and bars across the course for visitors.

What to Watch Live from Down Royal

The Ulster Derby is a key race that takes place at the course. It is a flat handicap race open to all three-year-old horses. The distance is 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 150 yards, taking place every June.

The history of this race stretches back as far as 1936, being restricted to three-year-olds since as far back as then. In 1994 it was opened to older horses as well. The distance was increased from the original 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 68 yards.

However, after twenty years of the race being open, it was again restricted to 3 year olds, as it still is to this day. This is widely regarded as the most valuable flat race in Northern Ireland.
