About the Course

Located in the heart of Devon, and usually holding 18 fixtures between April and October, Newton Abbot is one of the UK’s most popular racecourses for summer jumps meetings.

Having a relatively easy jump course, it’s a favourite amongst former flat racers trying out steeplechasing as novices.

Although it is one of the smallest courses in the UK, Newton Abbot has received several accolades for being such a high-quality racing venue.

Between 2012 to 2015, it won the Racehorse Owners Association Gold Award four times and has been voted ‘Best Small Racecourse’. In 2013 it was also a contender for Best Racecourse in the UK.

While racing has always been popular in Newton Abbot, it was not until a century after the racecourse first opened that it was fully and properly equipped. In fact, there was no main grandstand until 1969, with Her Majesty the Queen Mother herself opening the one that is used today.

Corporate facilities were not added to Newton Abbot themselves until 1990. Although it took some time for the racecourse on a whole to finally be completed, a rolling programme of redevelopment during the winter ensures that the facilities only improve with each and every year.

Currently, Newton Abbot’s most valuable race day is also the social pinnacle of the year – Ladies Day. For the event, thousands of women descend on the racecourse in all of their finery as the world of fashion and horse racing combine.

Newton Abbott Races Live Stream: Course Layout

Being just nine furlongs around, Newton Abbot is a tight, left-handed oval with a very short run-in. There are four flights of hurdles or seven easy fences per circuit and horses who race on pace hold a high advantage over those who need to come from behind.

Viewing Options at Newton Abbot

With three enclosures and two restaurants, the Devon racecourse of Newton Abbot has a variety of options for its attendants to view its races.

The Family Enclosure is situated in the centre of the course and puts racegoers in the middle of the action. Giving an up-close and personal view of the horses, this enclosure also features a children’s play area. It really is the ideal place for families to enjoy their time at the races.

Children and students can benefit greatly by having free access to the Course Enclosure. Offering a stunning view, a picnic area, an indoor bar, a betting area, and a cafeteria, this enclosure has almost everything a racegoer could need.

The Paddock Enclosure takes Newton Abbot’s prime position at the racecourse, offering a grandstand that overlooks the Winning Post. Viewers can enjoy seeing the horses up-close in the Parade Ring before and after races.

That’s in addition to a selection of bars and food. Newton Abbot features two restaurants at its racecourse: Paddock Restaurant and Winning Post Restaurant.

Set within the main grandstand and overlooking the Parade Ring, Paddock Restaurant offers a selection of local food and wines to enhance its customers’ day at the races.

Meanwhile, Winning Post Restaurant provides phenomenal views of the track and combines racing with an exquisite menu of local produce. Providing easy access to both the Course and Paddock Enclosures, attendants will be able to catch all of the best moments of each race.

History of Horse Racing in Newton Abbot

In 1866, local racing enthusiasts pooled together funding to purchase land for the sport. Racing took off immediately, becoming very popular in the region. However, despite its popularity, not much money was going back into the track. And so it only had the bare minimum – not even having its own grandstand.

These races were only halted twice since the course’s beginnings, those times being the World Wars.

During the First World War, the racecourse was made into a prisoner-of-war camp. The Second World War, on the other hand, saw the course mostly being abandoned. That is, with an exception being made for a single day of racing.

When the war ended, a massive crowd of 17,500 people came together to celebrate on August Bank Holiday in 1945.

A grandstand was finally added to the racecourse in 1969, with Her Majesty the Queen Mother opening the stand herself. Corporate facilities were also added by 1990, and since then facilities have been added and upgraded to attract bigger crowds
