Plumpton Upcoming Live Streamed Races
The Plumpton course plays host to the Sussex Champion Hurdle in March every year.
Nestled at the base of the range of chalk hills known as the South Downs, Plumpton hosts 16 National Hunt race meetings annually. These take place between September and May each year.
Plumpton Racecourse: Course Layout
Left-handed and with a sharp oblong shape, the course at Plumpton is just one mile and one furlong around. Having tight bends, pronounced undulations throughout and an uphill home straight, the racecourse can be particularly testing.
Six fairly stiff fences are set per circuit, and there is a run-in of about a furlong. Aggressive jockeying, a well-trained horse, and a high level of strategy are essential for almost every race that is set on this course.
Plumpton Races – About the Course
While being a very small course, having its full circuit be just over one mile, Plumpton has achieved several accolades over the years, its most prominent being ‘Best Small Racecourse in the South’ in 2018.
Having such an uncomplicated circuit (two bends and two straights), racegoers will have a clear view of the action from almost any location on the course. Runners will pass by every location at least twice.
The racecourse has been compared to a rollercoaster by many jockeys; It’s very hilly around Plumpton. Horses are certainly going to require high levels of stamina to be a contender on this course.
Originally, Plumpton Racecourse was used as a venue for ‘coursing’. In coursing, two dogs would chase down a hare, with the winner being the dog that catches the hare first. Although coursing was held at the racecourse for nearly 30 years, it fell out of favour with audiences a few years after horse racing was added to the venue in 1884.
The course received the attention of the nation after racing legend Tony McCoy rode his 3000th winning horse to victory in February 2009 during the Tyser & Co Beginners’ Chase.
Viewing Options at Plumpton
Although audiences will have a great view of the action from almost any location on the course, Plumpton has three designated enclosures for watching the races:
The Course Enclosure is located at the centre of the racecourse; It gives racegoers a close-up view of the horses as they run around the track. There is also a space to have a picnic or enjoy the centre course bar.
Having a phenomenal view of the paddock and winners’ enclosure, the Grandstand Enclosure gives audiences access to the South Downs and Lewes grandstands. Having access to several bars and food outlets, this enclosure also grants direct entry to the parade ring.
Finally, being situated in line with the winning post, the Premier Enclosure provides panoramic views of the track. The Paddock Restaurant, being inside the enclosure, is directly over the course.
The restaurant has a balcony that provides the best possible views, although tables must be pre-booked. The ground floor also hosts the Paddock Bar which overlooks the paddock and the racetrack while providing easy access to the winners’ enclosure.
History of Horse Racing in Plumpton
The racecourse in Plumpton was not intended for host horse racing at first. Being founded by Thomas Henry Case in 1876, the track was originally used for hare coursing. It would be another eight years before horse racing would be introduced, with the two sports being held side-by-side for a time.
With the first National Hunt meeting being held on February 11th, 1884, audiences quickly took to the sport and its popularity skyrocketed. This, in part, had to do with the performances of Cowslip. The horse not only won the first race of the meet but went on to win another race later that day, much to the acclaim of spectators.
However, due to very low attendance for coursing – especially when compared to the highly popular horse racing meets – management began to review their options.
By 1889, coursing had ceased (although one more attempt with the sport would be made between 1902 and 1908). Plumpton was becoming more and more widely accepted for horse racing.
In 1901, the Southdown Hunt Races moved their annual meeting to Plumpton, where it remained until the outbreak of World War 1. A grandstand was also erected in 1904, although it was transferred from the Northampton racecourse.
After the conclusion of WW2, many improvements essential to the course’s survival were made under the patronage of Isidore Kerman. Finally, during the 1990s, the steeplechase and hurdling tracks were majorly changed. This gave it the shape of the course that we know today.
Plumpton Races Live Stream Calendar Highlights
Currently, the highest quality event held at Plumpton is the Class 2 Sussex Champion Hurdle. Being just under two miles, the winners of this handicap usually continue to become champions of even bigger events.
An example of this is the winner of the race in 2007; a few months after winning the Hurdle, Dubbrody Millar went on to become the Topham Chase Champion.
