The course was opened in 1848 and has been a roaring success ever since. This is especially true in more recent years as the track’s facilities have grown and the quality of racing they stage has continually improved.
Tipperary Course Overview
A lot of people are willing to travel to Tipperary Racecourse because of how very accessible it is. The venue is adjacent to Limerick Junction railway station. The town centre is also just a few kilometres away.
In short, it may be a long way to Tipperary but once you arrive the racecourse isn’t. Couldn’t resist that one.
Flat Course
The flat course is a long oval shaped course that is left-handed. The track is a mile and two furlongs long but also has a five furlong straight joined at the entrance to the main track.
This means that the course can stage all levels of flat racing with no complaints from owners or jockeys that the track isn’t capable.
The circuit is considered to be fair and there is no true draw bias. Having said that, because of how fast the track is, some jockeys prefer to have the low draw as the opening bend comes up relatively quickly so they can have a fast pass coming round that.
Because of how fast the sprint track is (arguably the fastest in the country) the track does favour front runners and those who like to run on the pace. That’s because those who like to swoop late often find their opportunity has been and gone before they get to have their say.
Therefore, even those jockeys who are specialists in arriving late and winning in the dying strides know that you have to time your run to perfection at Tipperary or risk looking daft. As a result many just opt to ride closer to the pace and not take that risk.
Jumps Course
The National Hunt track is relatively flat and oval shaped, as well as also being left handed. There are no draw or horse favouring there at all, although because of the nature of the course, often the field travels as one.
This is because jockeys fear that because of how flat and long the home straight is, if you allow someone to get away from the pack then they aren’t for catching. Tipperary is a relatively quick track and the fences aren’t too sharp, which therefore allows for a good pace heading round.
Because Tipperary hosts racing from April to October, the ground either falls in two extremes: good or heavy. The summer months when the weather is nice enough, the ground follows suit and is always good/drying.
But, as a result of this, when the rain does fall the ground gets incredibly heavy and boggy; Towards the end of the card in heavy conditions you will almost always see jockeys searching for the better ground that hasn’t been trampled on in prior races, usually towards the outside.
When the ground does become heavy, the galloping characteristic of the track almost diminishes as the ground gets sticky. This makes it more of a trudge.
Viewing at Tipperary Racecourse
Overall, Tipperary Racecourse is a stunning track that is mesmerising to the eye. Located in County Tipperary, the views from the grandstand are truly exceptional.
Those who opt to stand there can see the acres of glorious track and see nearly every inch of the standside part of the course.
Everything at the venue is neat and tidy, from the simple things such as well kept hedges, smartly placed big screens, the list is endless. If you are looking for an Irish track to visit then it is well worth considering Tipperary.
Tipperary Racing Live Stream Calendar Highlights
The most significant meeting of Tipperary’s eleven day fixture list is the Super Sunday.
You will see both National Hunt racing and flat racing at Grade 3 and Grade 2 level. The Grade 2 on that exceptional day of racing in October is the Tipperary Hurdle.
The Tipperary Hurdle, otherwise known as the Istabraq Hurdle, is a National Hunt hurdle race that takes place over a two mile trip. Horses of four years old and older in the race are eligible to run in the race.
You might notice in any given timespan that there will have been a lot of the same horses lining up to run in the race. This shows just how much some owners want to win this one.
