Kilbeggan Upcoming Live Streamed Races
The course is always incredibly popular and a lot of that is due to the accessibility of the track. It’s just an hours drive from Dublin itself and 13 miles from Mullinger; A town packed full of people who enjoy a day out at the races.
Kilbeggan Course Overview
The course is rich in history. In fact, records show that the first race to ever be hosted at the course was in 1840.
Unusually for National Hunt courses, the two different tracks produce very different rider experiences; The chase circuit being quite a nice ride but the hurdles course having the potential to be a horrible circuit depending on the mount.
The course itself is a sharp, right-handed course that’s nine furlongs in extent with just a 300 yard run-in. Kilbeggan requires jockeys and horses alike to be quite switched on.
This is because if they lose their awareness or train of thought then that lapse in concentration can force the race to quite literally run away from them.
Hurdle and Chase Circuits
The chase course runs outside of the hurdles course and has six fences overall. The trickiest of those fences is the second to last because after that jump is the turn on to the home bend, which is the sharpest of them all.
Coming straight off a jump and having to swing straight into a tight bend means that there is no margin for error on that jump; If the horse lands flat-footed then they could lose their position coming on to the bend.
Or, if they simply don’t jump very well then they can lose all their momentum which in turn makes the bend a real struggle because of how sharp it is.
Because the hurdle track is on the inside of an already tight and sharp chase course, it is incredibly sharp. Therefore it requires a certain type of horse to win there.
The circuit is always on a turn; This can mean that those who prefer to switch off and gallop in straight lines become quite disorientated. Therefore, the horses with a bit more of a cheeky, child-like personality that like to be occupied are pretty successful at the course.
Viewing at Kilbeggan
Kilbeggan Racecourse enjoys views of plenty of greenery at every angle. The course is swamped with acres of land which gives the course a real open feel. This contrasts with those that are surrounded by buildings and trees that can often feel quite closed in.
The venue itself is very neat and tidy aesthetically, with a good quality restaurant and viewing area for the visitors paying that little bit extra. It features a grandstand for the general public that is well sheltered by the roof as well as the main building.
The course is quite an underrated one amongst the Irish racing fans. Many are quick to forget that this longstanding course has played host to some magnificent cards of racing; It has seen some spectacular talent ride on its well-kept track.
Just over five years ago the course had the now two-time Grand National winner Tiger Roll racing at the course; The Gordon Elliott gelding ran over 2m3f in a Ladies Day sponsored race.
For fans who want a great day of National Hunt racing whilst also enjoying a chirpy and cheerful racing environment then Kilbeggan Racecourse is the track to visit.
