Race meetings at Chepstow take place around the year since the flat races are organised in summer months while the jump races are carried out in the winter.
Chepstow Races Course Layouts
The main course at Chepstow is a 2-mile long, left-handed oval-shaped track with minor undulations. The racecourse is used for both flat and national hunt races and hosted a whopping 32 fixtures in 2017 alone.
With a 5-furlong finishing straight, there are 5 fences to be jumped on the jump racing course, while the complete circuit features 11 fences. All one-mile flat races are run on the straight course on the flat track.
Particularly in winter, most horses can get tired due to the downhill run and undulations, and therefore, make mistakes at the last hurdle. However, the front runners with athletic builds and no prior problems do generally well.
Chepstow Races History
The horse racing sport is not new to Wales. In fact, race meetings have been taking place at several locations before the establishment of a proper racecourse. St Arvans, which is in proximity to the current position of Chepstow, hosted a number of meetings between the years 1892 and 1914.
A group of businessmen and racing enthusiasts from South Wales formed an organisation to purchase the Piercefield House with the intention of laying out a permanent course for horse racing.
The new racecourse was unveiled in August 1926. The first race on the track came to be called the “Welsh Goodwood”, due to its success.
Immediately after the meeting, the racecourse faced a severe lack of funds and almost came to closing down, when the loan was sanctioned by the directors of a large bank.
The first national hunt race was organised on the course in 1927 and since then the Chepstow racecourse has been extensively used for both the flat and jump racing.
Watching Chepstow Races
The racecourse is located on the north of Chepstow, between Bristol and Cardiff, near the England border in Monmouthshire, Wales. The proximity to a number of highways, such as M4, M5, and M48 make it among one of the most accessible racecourses for equestrians in the UK.
The Chepstow racecourse is one of the three in Wales. The other two are Ffos Las and the Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse. It’s famous for its friendly atmosphere and charming vibe along with a breath-taking countryside view of the town of Chepstow. That’s not to mention the scenic Wye Walley with its 440 acres of lush green fields.
