With the facilities to host racing for the entirety of the season, the course is well-attended throughout the year; and with some very high-quality races dripped into the schedule, the venue can be jam-packed with racing fans from all over the country.
The course is known for its ability to propel jumps horses to the very top; The likes of nine-time Group 1 winner Cue Card and two-time Gold Cup winner Kauto Star have won at Haydock on several occasions.
Haydock Course Layouts
Haydock Racecourse has two separate tracks running next to each other, with the flat course circling around the outside of the jumps track. Both courses are oval-shaped and left-handed, but the pair have had very differing reviews in the past.
The flat course is seen as a very fair track; The two bends are wide and allow enough space for runners to move on to the stand side rail smoothly in longer races after taking the bend.
The course is 1m5f long and roughly half a furlong longer than the National Hunt track; It also has a flat extension for the 6f sprints. Like any track, the conditions are a massive factor in a jockey’s tactics when running the longer races.
When the surface is heavy then often jockeys switch to the stand side rail for the better ground, as the inside of the track is often where the worse ground is found.
However, when the ground is good/firm then the inside rail is often where the action takes place; In 7f sprints, many jockeys look to take the inside route and use the shortest route as a way to break away from the pack on the home bend.
National Hunt
The jumps course is regarded as a more difficult National Hunt track, especially due to its demanding past. The circuit is moderately flat, but it really tests the stamina of the runners. Those that settle into the rhythm of the race quickly and aren’t keen to steamroll round the course often flourish.
The natural subsoil on the course is clay-based. This means that when the weather is testing and there has been a lot of water overnight or the morning of races, the course becomes sloppy and even harder work due to the amount of water the ground has absorbed.
Up until the 2006/2007 jumps season, Haydock’s jump track was regarded as one of the most difficult courses in the country; arguably second to Aintree’s Grand National circuit.
The fences were quite significant in size and the drop after each fence was also great enough to cause fallers from landing impact alone. After the reputation of being a difficult track grew, the course removed the larger fences for shorter ones.
The fences were the centre of controversy again in 2018. Ahead of the Betfair Chase, the racecourse was asked by the BHA to lower and soften their fences – which they agreed to do so.
However, the amendments did not appear dramatic enough as the fences caused six horses to fall and another to unseat its rider, leading to another fence adjustment.
Top Races on the Live Stream Schedule
The Betfair Chase is Haydock’s most prestigious race in its entire racing calendar. The jumps race is three miles and one and a half furlongs long. It’s a Grade 1 race that attracts some of the country’s best five-year-olds and over.
In 2019, the November-scheduled race was won by Lostintranslation. It made bookmakers cut their ante post price for the Gold Cup at Cheltenham considerably, where the gelding ran well but could only manage third.

Haydock Racecourse is a family-friendly and popular venue for racing all year round. The course has numerous stands where spectators can enjoy views of both tracks as well as the parade ring.
Trees and forestry surround the track which gives a sense of isolation from society; Many have noted that this puts a real emphasis on the horses galloping around the track.
Haydock Racecourse was awarded Racecourse of the Year in both 1998 and 2000. It would be no surprise to see the venue regain its crown in seasons to come, either.
