Flat Course
The flat course is a left-handed and slightly steepening oval course and the bends aren’t overly sharp.
The width of the track means that there isn’t a chance for traffic issues coming around those turns. Overall, the circuit is therefore a fair course.
The home straight is on a gradual rise but not considerable, meaning that it is a stiff test but not a gruelling issue for horses.
The draw bias is only present in the six furlong and seven furlong sprints. This is because of how immediate the first bend is.
This means that a low draw enables the runner to smoothly nip around that bend and settle towards the front end of the pack; Whereas a wide draw doesn’t give enough time for runners to cut across and cut into the pack and therefore means they are travelling over further.
Jumps Course at Leopardstown Races
The National Hunt course is a mile and three quarters long, oval course. The track is left-handed and wide. It is very flat in all (besides the home straight like the flat course) and a fair but stiff test.

The Irish Champion Stakes is certainly the highlight of the flat racing season at Leopardstown; This race forms the first half of the Champions weekend.
The Group 1, one mile and two furlong long race takes place in September and attracts only the highest quality horses. Entrants must be three years old or older, with three your olds carrying just 9st1lb and older horses carrying six pounds more.
The race has been won by some of racing’s top horses, with the most notable name being Sea The Stars. The Irish bay, who is now breeding for Sunderland Holdings Ltd, is one of Ireland’s highest regarded sprinters. The horse is often involved in the ‘best horses of all time’ conversation.
The John Oxx trained 1m4f specialist only ever lost one race in his time – his debut. Besides that defeat, he won every race he was entered into.
Most of those wins including some of racing’s most prestigious races; The 2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby, International Stakes, Irish Champion Stakes and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Although the Christmas Festival hosts seven Grade 1 races, the most prestigious race on the National Hunt side of things is the Irish Champion Hurdle. The January-scheduled race is two miles long and runners must conquer eight hurdles in all.
Entrants must also be four years old and older. The most successful horse in the race is Hurricane Fly, who won five races on the bounce from 2011 to 2015. Ruby Walsh was on board for the latter four rides for trainer Willie Mullins.
