Many refer to Newmarket as the central hub of British horseracing. That’s because of its housing of the largest group of training yards in the country.

As well as these training yards the racecourse is home to some key national organisations; These include that of Tattersalls, the main auctioneer in British racing, the National Horseracing Museum and the National Stud.

Newmarket Races: Why You Need to Watch

Here are some of many reasons why you really do need to witness the happenings at Newmarket on a live video streaming service if you can’t be there in person.

Racing out of Newmarket has occurred since at least 1622 in the reign of James I of England. The first recorded meeting being a £100 wager between horses owned by Lord Salisbury and the Marquess of Buckingham.

The Stuart monarchs were particularly proud of Newmarket Racecourse; In the year 1671 King Charles II became the first, and only reigning monarch to ride a winning horse in a meet.

An early staple of the Racecourse was the Newmarket Town Plate, which was first run in October of 1666. Whilst it is not the oldest English horse race still in existence, it holds merit for being the first organised race that ran under an officially regulated rule set.

These rules were set out by King Charles II on October 16th, 1665, making them universally binding and unquestioned.

Due to this fact, it is widely accepted that the Newmarket Town Plate would go on to set the basis for all future formal horse races. Also of great historical note is that the race was, and still is available to all amateur jockeys over the age of 16.

Until 1972, this was the only race that would allow female jockeys to compete. Newmarket in 1949 also used a photo finish for the first-ever time in British racing. This illustrates how truly innovative Newmarket Racecourse has been for the sport.

Newmarket Races: Course Layouts

The two courses that make up Newmarket Racecourse each hold a capacity of just over 20,000 spectators. The tracks only accommodate flat racing.

Rowley Mile

The Rowley Mile course at Newmarket

The Rowley Mile Course contains a 1 mile 2 furlong (2km) straight course with minor furrows towards “The Bushes” occurring two furlongs out.

The penultimate furlong is run downhill before the final furlong returning uphill, forming what is referred to as “The Dip”. Races longer than the distance of 1m 2f start on the “Cesarewitch or Beacon” course, which turns right before heading into the straight.

This course is used in the spring and autumn. The wide nature of the track allows it to accommodate a maximum field size of 35, hosting the Cambridgeshire Handicap and the Cesarewitch Handicap. It therefore hosts the largest field size for races in the UK after the Grand National.

Newmarket trivia:

The Rowley Mile is named after “Old Rowley” who happened to be the favourite racehorse of King Charles II.

July Course

The July Course, also commonly referred to as the Summer Course is made up of a 1 mile straight; It is referred to as the “Bunbury Mile”. Another dip is formed after 2 furlongs with a long downhill stretch. That’s before the course heads back uphill for the final furlong.

Newmarket Races’ July course

For races longer than a mile, the course once again starts on the “Cesarewitch/Beacon” course, turning right into the straight. The July course, as the name suggests, is used from July and through the summer.

There is actually a third course at Newmarket. However it is used just once per year for the running of the Newmarket Town Plate.

An interesting addition to the two courses is the use of a grass airstrip by light aircraft. This was widely used during the Second World War in which the airstrips became RAF Newmarket.

Meets were moved to the July course during this period, and this allowed Newmarket to be the only racecourse in the UK to remain operational throughout the period of the war.

In June 2000 a tragic plane crash involving jockeys Ray Cochrane and Frankie Dettori occurred taking off from Newmarket Racecourse. The pilot, Patrick Mackey, died in the crash. Both jockeys survived but were injured.

Newmarket Races Viewing

For spectators at Newmarket races, there are a number of options including:

  • the Premier Enclosure where spectators are located by the winning post,
  • the Grandstand with a fair view of the entire course,
  • the Champions Lawn for a premium comfort option, and
  • the Garden Enclosure which is marketed as a family viewing area.

Key events to watch via the Newmarket races live stream include two of the nation’s five classic races; The 1000 and 2000 Guineas, and a total of nine of British racing’s 36 annual Group 1 races.
