It is a venue for both Flat and National Hunt racing and is home to other equestrian events, as well as the home of the annual Welsh Championship Hurdle.

The racecourse is located in Ffos Las, Wales, which literally translated from Welsh means “Blue Ditch”.

The first race welcomed a sell-out crowd of over 10,000 people, with the first-ever race being the “Jamie Yeates Memorial Maiden Stakes”. It was dedicated to a 17-year-old aspiring jockey who tragically passed away the year before. Future plans include the formation of a “Celtic Festival” to take place annually.

The area of Ffos Las is located in a rural community between Carway and Trimsaran in Carmarthenshire Wales. It is named after a farm that had existed at the site before it became a mining community.

Local Hero

After development, it became the third racecourse to be located in Wales. It cost over £20 million to develop on a 600-acre opencast mining site. The development was bankrolled by Dai Walters, a keen racing spectator and trainer operating out of Peter Bowen’s yard in West Wales and also out of Helen Lewis’ Hollies Stables in Cardiff.

It became the first National Hunt Racecourse to be constructed in the United Kingdom in over 80 years. The idea was to join Bangor and Chepstow in the Welsh racing circuit as well as holding close proximity to Welsh ports, giving it easy transport links to the Irish racing scene.

It is similarly notable for hosting the first-ever race meeting featuring harness racing in May 2010.

The course features Olympic-quality training facilities, with the equestrian centre being used as a training base for the London 2012 Olympic games. The official opening ceremony of the course was hosted by Sir Peter O’Sullevan on August 28th 2009.

It drew an audience of over 12,000 spectators. Following the final race of the day, there was a feature concert by Cerys Matthews. It doesn’t get much more Welsh than that.

Ffos Las Live Stream Races to Watch

The Welsh Champion Hurdle is a key race to take place at the venue. It is a limited handicap hurdle open to all horses aged at least four years old. It is run over 2 miles and takes place in October of every year.

The race initially ran at Chepstow until 2002, before being retired. In 2010 the race was revived, and the first revived race took place in 2011. It was won by Oscar Whisky, a horse owned by the owner and founder of Ffos Las racecourse, Dai Walters. Karma.

Ffos Las Races Live Stream: Course Layout

The course at Ffos Las is over 1 mile and 4 furlongs in length featuring an oval track for both National Hunt and Flat racing. The equestrian centre also features a venue for eventing, point-to-point racing, as well as show jumping and chase meetings.

The Ffos Las flat course

The two straights are connected by long gradual bends, and two chutes at each end of the course allow for 5f and 6f sprint races. The National Hunt layout consists of six hurdles, three located on each straight.

The courses feature modern underground drainage systems allowing racing to take place in almost all conditions. This is key when you consider that it is in a particularly wet area; Conditions are usually trying and testing.

The course is very flat with no significant decline or inclines, and the overall width is 60 metres, allowing for an ideal course for most jockeys.

Ffos Las Viewing

The venue boasts an overall capacity of 20,000 people, including a 1,000-capacity grandstand with full hotel facilities. 120 horseboxes are a feature of the racecourse.

There are a number of options for spectators wishing to view the race in comfort. There is the Bridles Hospitality package offered by the racecourse, offering fine dining with aerial views over the racecourse and access to the Grandstand.

To accompany this there are a number of private hospitality suites available with private balconies and buffet service available. The course features magnificent transport links with a bus operating from between Llanelli and Carmarthen, with a stop outside the racecourse entrance.

There is also a dedicated shuttle bus service operating between Llanelli railway station and the racecourse entrance, provided by Ffos Las Racecourse.
