05 JAN 2025 | 13:55 | Lawlor's Of Naas Novice Hurdle (Grade 1) | - | 2m 4f 2y |
The racecourse has become increasingly popular in the last ten years or so. This has been boosted by Naas’ staple National Hunt race, the Lawlor’s Hotel Novice Hurdle, being upgraded to a Grade 1 race in early 2015.
Naas Course Overview
Flat Course
The flat circuit is a stiff galloping track that is one and a half miles long. It has two additional chutes for one mile and six furlong races, with the latter chute allowing for shorter races to be run on just a home straight rather than having a large bend in the middle.
With that in mind, there is no draw bias in any distance races, especially with the bends not being sharp and wide; That ends up giving plenty of space to those who are drawn out wide to come across.
One would assume that given the conditions and track, punters would have a field day at the meetings as all other variables are eradicated. Strangely, however, that isn’t the case and for some reason it is quite an unlucky course for favourite backers; Some have nicknamed Naas Racecourse as the ‘Punter’s Graveyard’.
Jumps Course
The National Hunt course is an oval shaped circuit that is a mile and a half long. Although it is predominantly a galloping track, the course also provides a stiff test.
Rides at Naas are more a simple ride rather than an easy one. With there being wide bends and open straights, there are very few unlucky losers at Naas. The circuit is structured to not favour particular types of horses and allow all an even chance of being victorious.
The track does have an uphill finish which can be the biggest test of the entire track, besides the jumps. Those sent on too early may face the consequences; And those who leave it too late may struggle to make up the ground in the final furlongs.
Viewing at Naas Racecourse
Naas is a special racecourse that goes above and beyond to provide quality service to racegoers and those involved with the horses. This is illustrated by the fact that they won The Irish Field Racecourse of the Year Award 2019.
The facilities at the course are almost new, and the grandstand blends perfectly into the buildings to produce a very official but effective look. Those who choose to watch from the grandstand can expect to see the acres of green that Naas owns. It encases a forest to give a very natural feel to the course.
There are simply loads of viewing points for the courses; No one will struggle to find a spot to watch the horses charge over the finishing line. Naas Racecourse is a course that when you’ve been to once, you’ll want to just keep going back.
Naas Race Calendar Highlights
The standout race on the flat at Naas Racecourse is the Group 3 Blue Wind Stakes, a one mile and two furlong sprint that takes place annually in May. Entrants for the race must be mare or fillies that are three years old or older. Previous Group winners must carry penalties for their prior successes; Group 1 and 2 winners will be carrying five pounds more, with Group 3 winners carrying three.
The race itself is named after Blue Wind, whose 1981 season will be fondly remembered by many Irish racing fans. The mare had an unbelievable year, winning the Oak Stakes and the Irish Oaks in impressive style on both occasions.
Her spell in Ireland was short lived though; The bay was soon sent to the United States in 1982 but was unsuccessful over there.
The Lawlor’s Hotel Novice Hurdle, formerly known pre-advertisement as the Slaney Novice Hurdle, is a two mile and four furlong hurdle race run in January. The race is incredibly competitive and trainers use the Grade 1 race as an opportunity to see whether their cavalry would be capable of competing at Cheltenham.
In 2020, Gordon Elliott’s Envoi Allen comfortably strode to victory under hands and heels to win the race at miniscule odds of ¼. He then was waited with until March where he won the Ballymore Novice’s Hurdle on the Cheltenham stage. Envoi Allen was then tipped to become a Gold Cup horse in the following few years with Elliott confirming that she would be schooled over fences.
