Jumps Course

The National Hunt track at Tramore is, arguably, sharper than its partnering flat course due to its shape which is a rounded off square.

Handy horses often prevail at the track as they are capable of tackling the sharp turns without too much hesitation, whereas those that prefer long straights and open bends never get along with the course.

The true test of a horse comes just before the home straight. There is a downhill straight before the second to last fence, of five, which often can claim some fallers given how much momentum the runners build up going downhill.

Then after tackling that jump, they must tackle the uphill home straight, which is incredibly short being just 160 yards long.

Viewing at Tramore Racecourse

The venue itself has two large, identical stands that overlook the entire course and also have easy accessibility to the parade ring (located to the left hand side of the venue).

The stands have a great view of the track and because of how flat the course is, you can see the horses coming from a good distance away.

The track is very much out in the open, which can leave it feeling isolated. However, this aspect also puts a definite focus on the racing on offer rather than the venue itself, which some racecourses that are renovated nowadays seem to do.

Being hosted on the first day of the new year, the race is often run in heavy conditions due to the usual December/January downpour in Ireland.

These conditions, matched with the fact the race is two miles and five furlongs long, means that the race can be a mud bath at times and a real trudge. It really can be a proper test for those who don’t like heavy ground.
