Listowel Upcoming Live Streamed Races
Next, we’ll take a look at just what to watch and review the Listowel racecourse.
This horse racing track is the venue for the incredibly popular Harvest Festival, an amalgamation of top flat racing and National Hunt racing that takes place in September.
Despite having nine meetings in the entire year, they only come around twice, a two day festival in June opens proceedings before the week-long Harvest Festival in September.
Listowel Course Overview
The flat track of Listowel is a course like no other. Those who do not truly understand the course and how best to ride it are more than certainly pleased that Listowel isn’t scheduled into the calendar more frequently.
The course is tight, sharp and the pace that the track creates can really catch jockeys off-guard. A bit like the flat track at Limerick, the surface plays a huge role to play in how races pan out; When the track is soft, the speed is more regular, and races pan out in a more ordinary fashion.
However, when the ground is heavy, which it quickly can become, there’s a benefit to having a lower draw and riding on the pace.
The National Hunt track, similarly to the flat, is also fairly nippy and tight. The circuit is rectangular-shaped and a mile and a quarter in length.
The track has five fences on the chase circuit which are fairly evenly spread out; That is until competitors race on to the home straight as they must tackle two fences in the two furlong home straight.
By that stage in the race, nearly all horses are off the bridle and the jockeys are desperately pushing their mounts to find more. This can often lead to some fallers as some horses can’t travel at full speed and clear obstacles.
At Listowel, when the ground becomes heavy then plenty of horses simply cannot perform to the best of their abilities on it. The darker, blackened soil absorbs water and becomes very sludgy and demanding.
If you follow any punters, you will often see them brush over any poor runs at Listowel on heavy because of this. That’s because some horses just can’t deal with the surface and punters believe it would be daft to factor this in when matting betting-orientated decisions.
However, for punters that don’t factor this into their bets it can lead to some bigger priced winners for horses bouncing back to form after a poor showing at Listowel and not getting much market support because of that.
Viewing at Listowel Racecourse
Listowel is a fantastic course to visit. Of course, if you can’t get there then a Listowel races live stream is the perfect antidote.
The grandstand is the focal point of the track; It is short and wide and merges with the concourse which makes the entire section feel like one whole crowd rather than two different viewing points.
The view from the stand is also second to none, separated from all over buildings by large bushes and trees. The grandstand has a feeling of solidarity as it looks out over the track and the wall of trees and shrubs surrounding the track.
Those that do go to Listowel’s seven day festival often return and it’s clear to see why.
Listowel Race Calendar Highlights
The highlight of the entire Listowel racing calendar is the Guinness Kerry National. The race is three miles long and the prize money usually sits at around two hundred thousand euros.
Being such a long race, it is a very good indicator for owners as to whether their runner is capable of going for the Grand National. If depends whether they can handle the distance or the larger fields.
The most notable horse that has used the Kerry National as a stepping stone towards Grand National is Monty’s Pass. Jimmy Managan’s gelding won the world famous Aintree classic in 2003 on his first attempt. This was at odds of 16/1, and just seven months after winning the Listowel race.
